Getting around Singapore is refreshingly simple. Trains are frequent and air-conditioned, buses reach almost every corner of the island, and taxis and ride-hailing cars are easy to find. Here is how to use each one, starting from the moment you land.
From Changi Airport to the city
Changi Airport has four terminals: Terminals 1 to 3 are linked by the Skytrain and walkways, Jewel connects directly to Terminal 1, and Terminal 4 is served by a shuttle bus. To reach the city, you have three main options:
- MRT: Changi Airport station sits beneath Terminals 2 and 3. Ride two stops to Tanah Merah and change to an East-West Line train towards the city. It is the most economical route, though the slowest.
- Taxi: follow the signs to the taxi queue. Metered fares include an airport surcharge, and extra charges apply at peak times and late at night.
- Ride-hailing: apps such as Grab and Gojek have designated pick-up points at each terminal.

The MRT: your main way around
The Mass Rapid Transit network has six colour-coded lines (North-South, East-West, North East, Circle, Downtown and Thomson-East Coast), plus light-rail feeder loops in a few suburbs. Trains run from early morning until around midnight and come every few minutes at busy times. Signs and announcements are in English, and platform screen doors make stations feel calm and safe for families. Remember that eating and drinking are not allowed on trains or in stations.
Paying for transport
The easiest way to pay is to tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard bank card, or a phone wallet linked to one, at the fare gates and on buses. Fares are distance-based and calculated automatically, as long as you tap in and out with the same card. Each traveller needs their own card or phone, and your bank may add foreign transaction fees, so check before you go. If you prefer, buy a stored-value EZ-Link card at a station ticket office or convenience store and top it up as you travel.
Buses
Buses fill the gaps the MRT leaves, reaching places such as East Coast Park, parts of the Southern Ridges and Changi Village for Pulau Ubin. Raise your hand as your bus approaches so the driver stops, board at the front and tap your card, then tap again as you leave by the rear door so you pay the right fare. A live bus-arrival app tells you when the next bus is due and when to get off.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Metered taxis can be hailed on the street in many areas, but in the city centre it is usually quicker to head to a taxi stand, which you will find at malls, hotels and attractions. Surcharges apply at peak hours, late at night and from certain locations. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab, Gojek and several local alternatives show the fare before you book, which many visitors prefer. Expect demand and fares to jump during heavy rain and the evening rush.
Driving, walking and trips across the border
Driving is on the left, but few visitors need a car: electronic road pricing on busy roads, costly parking and excellent public transport make it hard to justify. Walking is pleasant in the early morning and evening, helped by covered walkways and underground links between stations and malls. Sentosa is reached by monorail, cable car or a level walk across the bridge from HarbourFront.
Beyond the border, buses and a short shuttle train cross the Causeway to Johor Bahru in Malaysia, and coaches run from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and Malacca. Ferries from HarbourFront and Tanah Merah head to the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan. Allow time for immigration on both sides, and check each country's entry requirements in advance.
Stay connected in Singapore
Live data makes Singapore's transport even smoother: route planners pick the fastest MRT line, bus apps count down to the next arrival, and ride apps need a connection to book and track your car. With a HelloSIM eSIM, data is ready from the arrival hall onwards. It is data-only, so install it at home, let it connect on arrival and keep your own number for calls. Continuing into Malaysia or Indonesia? An Asia Pacific plan can cover several countries on one eSIM; check its destination list.
