Millions of visitors travel around Turkey every year without any trouble, and serious crime against tourists is uncommon. The problems people do run into are mostly petty theft and tourist-trap scams, which a few simple habits help you avoid.
General safety
- Watch your bag and phone in crowds: the T1 tram, the Grand Bazaar, Istiklal Avenue, Eminönü and busy ferry piers are classic pickpocket spots.
- Keep valuables in a zipped bag worn in front, and don't leave your phone on café tables near the street.
- Use the hotel safe for your passport and spare cards, and carry a photo of your passport's main page.
- Stay away from political demonstrations and large gatherings, and follow police instructions if an area is closed off.
- Read your government's travel advice before you go and check it again during the trip.

Scams to watch for
- The friendly bar invitation: a charming stranger, often around Taksim or Sultanahmet, suggests a drink at a bar they know, and the night ends with a huge bill and pressure to pay. Choose your own venues.
- The dropped shoe brush: a shoe-shiner drops his brush, you hand it back, he insists on a "thank you" shine and then asks for an inflated fee.
- Taxi tricks: no meter, long detours or a driver claiming you handed over a smaller banknote than you did. Insist on the meter, use a taxi app where you can and count notes out loud as you pay.
- Menus without prices: in tourist areas, ask the price before ordering, especially fish and meze brought to the table unasked.
- Shop detours: self-appointed guides and new friends who steer you into carpet or leather shops usually earn a commission. Polite firmness works.
Health basics
Private hospitals in the big cities are well equipped and used to foreign patients, and travel insurance that covers medical care is strongly recommended. Pharmacies (eczane) are everywhere, and a rota of duty pharmacies (nöbetçi eczane) stays open at night, with the list posted in pharmacy windows. Most visitors drink bottled water. In summer, protect yourself from sun and heat, especially at exposed sites such as Ephesus and Pamukkale.
Emergency numbers and getting help
- 112 is the single emergency number for police, ambulance and fire across Turkey.
- Major tourist areas, including Sultanahmet in Istanbul, have tourist police who can take theft reports.
- Your embassy or consulate can help with lost or stolen passports, so save its address and phone number before you travel.
- Keep your accommodation's address written in Turkish to show taxi drivers or emergency services.
Natural hazards and areas to take care in
Turkey lies in an active earthquake zone. Know the basics (drop, cover and hold on) and note your accommodation's emergency exits. In hot, dry summers, wildfires can affect forested coastal areas, so follow local instructions if roads are closed. At the beach, respect warning flags. Many governments advise against travel to areas close to Turkey's south-eastern borders; check current advice if your route heads far east or south-east.
Getting around safely
- At night, use licensed taxis, taxi apps or public transport rather than accepting lifts.
- Roads can be busy and driving assertive, so avoid long rural drives after dark.
- Solo women generally travel without major problems; dressing modestly away from the resorts and a firm "no" to unwanted attention help, and on intercity buses staff usually seat women travelling alone next to other women.
- For boat trips and paragliding, choose established operators and make sure life jackets and a safety briefing are provided.
Stay connected in Turkey
When something goes wrong, being able to open a map, share your live location with a travel companion, find the nearest duty pharmacy or pull up a taxi app's trip record makes a real difference. A HelloSIM eSIM handles the data side: install it before you fly and it connects once you land. Because it is data-only, your home SIM stays in the phone for regular calls and texts.
