Singapore has a reputation as one of Asia's most expensive destinations, and for hotels and alcohol it deserves it. Food and transport, though, can be surprisingly affordable, and many of the best sights cost nothing. The figures below are rough ranges in Singapore dollars (S$) per person; prices change often, so treat them as a starting point rather than a quote.
Daily budgets at a glance
- Budget: roughly S$80–140 a day. A hostel or capsule bed, three hawker meals, public transport and mostly free sights.
- Mid-range: around S$250–450 a day, sharing a double room. A comfortable hotel, a mix of hawker centres and sit-down restaurants, some ride-hailing and one or two paid attractions.
- Luxury: from roughly S$800 a day upwards. A five-star hotel, fine dining, cocktails with a view and private transfers.

Accommodation
Accommodation is by far the biggest cost. Dorm beds and capsule hostels typically run around S$35–70 a night, mid-range hotel rooms roughly S$200–350, and top hotels well above S$500. Areas such as Chinatown, Bugis, Little India and Lavender usually offer better value than Marina Bay or Orchard Road while staying close to the MRT. Rates rise sharply during big events, and some hotels quote prices before tax and service charge, so check the final total before you book.
Food and drink
Hawker centres are the easiest way to save. A plate of chicken rice or noodles usually costs around S$4–7, and a kopi around S$1.50–2.50. Mall food courts are a little pricier, while a casual sit-down restaurant comes to roughly S$25–50 per person before drinks. Alcohol is where budgets slip: expect around S$12–20 for a beer in a bar and more for cocktails. A "++" on the menu means service charge and GST will be added at the end.
Getting around
Public transport is excellent value. Most MRT and bus rides cost roughly S$1–2.50, so even a busy sightseeing day rarely tops S$10 in fares. Taxis and ride-hailing cars cost more: a short hop across the centre might be around S$12–20, and a ride from Changi Airport into the city roughly S$25–40, depending on the time of day and surcharges.
Sightseeing on a budget
Paid attractions add up quickly, especially for families, so plan a mix. Some of the most rewarding experiences in Singapore cost nothing:
- The Botanic Gardens, the outdoor Supertree Grove and its evening light show
- Merlion Park and the bayside promenade
- Temples and mosques in Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam
- The Southern Ridges, MacRitchie Reservoir and East Coast Park
If you plan several paid attractions, look for combination tickets for the wildlife parks or Sentosa.
Money-saving tips
- Refill a water bottle from the tap; Singapore's tap water is drinkable.
- Drink during happy hours, or skip the bar for a beer at a hawker centre.
- Travel outside major events and school holidays for lower hotel rates.
- Use the MRT rather than taxis, and walk short distances in the cooler morning and evening.
- Pay by card where you can and compare your bank's foreign transaction fees before you go.
Stay connected in Singapore
A connection helps a budget trip in small ways that add up: comparing hotel rates, finding the nearest hawker centre instead of a tourist-priced restaurant, and picking the MRT over a taxi after a quick route search. A HelloSIM eSIM is prepaid and data-only, so you know your data cost before you travel instead of risking roaming charges on your home bill. Set it up before departure and it connects once you land. If your trip continues to Malaysia, Thailand or elsewhere in the region, look at the Asia Pacific plan.
