Living in Switzerland means the EU is never far away: a day trip to Lake Como, a weekend in Paris or a ski week in Austria is often just a train ride from home. But Switzerland is not part of the EU roaming zone, and many Swiss mobile plans treat a trip across the border as expensive roaming. This guide explains how roaming from Switzerland usually works, how a travel eSIM helps, and what to set up for the trips Swiss travellers make most often.
Roaming from Switzerland: what it usually costs
Because Switzerland is outside the EU, the EU's roam like at home rules do not apply to Swiss SIM cards. Many Swiss plans do not include roaming in the EU at all, or include only a small amount of data. Once that is used up, roaming add-ons or pay-per-use data can be expensive.
Bills tend to surprise people for three reasons:
- Short trips do not feel like travel. A shopping trip across the border or a weekend in Milan feels close to home, but your phone treats it as roaming.
- Holiday use is heavier than everyday use. Maps, translation apps, photos and video calls use more data than you might expect.
- Destinations further away often need a separate add-on. For the USA, Thailand or Turkey, those add-ons can be expensive, and the cost grows with every extra day.
Check your current tariff before you leave, so you know exactly what is included and what is not.
How a travel eSIM works
A HelloSIM eSIM is a digital SIM for mobile data that you add to your phone alongside your Swiss SIM. It is data-only: there is no local phone number, and regular calls and SMS stay on your Swiss line. Calls and messages over WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or Viber run on the eSIM's data, and WhatsApp keeps your usual Swiss number.
- You buy the plan online, and the QR code arrives by email straight away.
- You install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, ideally a few days before you travel.
- The validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not on the day you buy it.
- If you need more data, you can top up the same eSIM without reinstalling it.

Popular destinations from Switzerland
Italy, France, Germany and Austria
The neighbouring countries are the classic short trips: a day by Lake Como, a weekend in Paris or Munich, or a ski week in Tyrol. HelloSIM's Europe plan covers all four, together with Switzerland itself and many more countries, so one eSIM works for a whole rail journey. One tip for Swiss residents: because the Europe plan also covers Switzerland, keep the HelloSIM line switched off until you have crossed the border. Otherwise it could connect at home and start its validity early.
Spain and Portugal
Beach holidays in Mallorca or on the Costa del Sol, a city break in Lisbon or a week on the Algarve are covered by the Europe plan too. Download offline maps before a road trip along the coast, and choose a little more data than you think you need if you will share holiday photos and videos every day.
The USA
From city breaks in New York to road trips through the national parks of California, Arizona and Utah, the USA is a popular long-haul trip. Distances are big, and the signal in remote parks and deserts can be patchy, so download offline maps before you set off. If your route also includes Canada or Mexico, HelloSIM's North America plan covers both, together with the USA, on one eSIM.

Thailand
Thailand is a favourite winter escape for many Swiss travellers. After a long flight, mobile data helps you book a taxi from the airport, find your hotel and check ferry times to the islands. The signal can drop on boat crossings, so save your tickets and hotel details on your phone before you board. If you continue to Vietnam, Cambodia or Malaysia, the Asia Pacific plan covers these countries on one eSIM.

Turkey
Istanbul makes a great long weekend, and the coast around Antalya is a classic beach destination for families. With a Turkey eSIM, maps, taxi apps and messages work once the eSIM connects after you land, and you do not depend on your Swiss plan's roaming add-ons or on the hotel Wi-Fi to stay in touch.

Is your phone ready for eSIM?
Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Typical eSIM phones include iPhone XS, XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and many A models. Open Settings and look for an Add eSIM option.
- If your phone came with a subscription from a Swiss operator, check that it is not locked to that operator. If it is, ask your operator about unlocking it before you travel.
- A phone bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao, especially an iPhone, may have two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM.
- Your Swiss SIM stays in the phone, so your number keeps working for calls and SMS, including codes from your bank.
Before you fly: step by step
- 1Check your Swiss tariff: what is included abroad and what add-ons cost.
- 2Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
- 3Choose your plan: a country plan, or the Europe plan for trips through several countries.
- 4Pay and receive the QR code by email straight away. You can check out as a guest with just your email address.
- 5Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: on iPhone via Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM; on Android under Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
- 6After you arrive, switch the HelloSIM line on, set it as the line for mobile data and turn on Data Roaming for it. This costs nothing extra because the data is prepaid.
- 7Turn data roaming off on your Swiss line to avoid roaming charges.
How much data to buy
- Weekend city break (Milan, Paris, Munich): about 1 GB for maps, messages and tickets.
- One week on the beach (Spain, Portugal, Turkey): 3–5 GB for maps, messages and social media.
- Two weeks in the USA or Thailand: 6–10 GB for regular use, more if you stream video or make many video calls.
- Working remotely or video calls every day: 10 GB or more per week.
Paying and getting help
You can pay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay or with your HelloSIM wallet balance. The website can show prices in Swiss francs (CHF) for reference, but payment is taken in euros (EUR), and your card or bank converts the amount automatically. The QR code arrives by email straight away and is also stored in your HelloSIM account and the HelloSIM iPhone app.
If you have a question, the support team is available on WhatsApp and by email at [email protected], and emails are answered within 24 hours.
