Whether you are travelling for Umrah or Hajj, your phone quietly does a lot of work along the way. It keeps you in touch with your group, opens the apps you need and lets your family at home hear from you. This guide explains how to stay connected in Makkah and Madinah with a Saudi Arabia eSIM, how much data to plan for and what to set up before you leave home, so that during the journey itself you can focus on what you came for.

Why a data connection matters on Umrah and Hajj
Pilgrimage days are long, crowded and closely organised. A working data connection helps in several practical ways:
- Staying with your group. Group leaders and travel agencies often share timings, meeting points and bus details in WhatsApp groups, and plans can change at short notice.
- Official apps. The Nusuk app, and other official apps your group or agency may ask you to use, need a data connection to show your bookings and updates.
- Finding your way. Maps help you get back to your hotel, find the right gate or meet your group after prayers, and you can share your live location with a travel companion.
- Calls home. Voice and video calls to your family over WhatsApp or FaceTime use mobile data, so a data plan is all you need to stay in touch.
Hotel Wi-Fi is useful in the evening, but it does not come with you on the bus, through the streets or to the airport.
Arriving at Jeddah or Madinah
Most pilgrims fly into King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah or Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah. After a long flight, the arrival halls can be busy, and a queue at a SIM counter is one more wait you can skip.
With a HelloSIM eSIM installed at home, you only need a few taps after landing:
- 1Switch the HelloSIM line on.
- 2Set it as the line for mobile data.
- 3Turn on Data Roaming for the HelloSIM line. This is needed and costs nothing extra, because the data is prepaid.
- 4Turn data roaming off on your home line.
The eSIM connects once you arrive, and its validity starts from that first connection in Saudi Arabia, not from the day you bought it. You can then message your group leader or your family from the arrivals hall, before the transfer to your hotel.
Networks and crowds in Makkah and Madinah
The HelloSIM eSIM for Saudi Arabia uses the STC and Mobily networks. Both are marked 5G, so if your phone supports 5G you can use it where these networks offer it; everywhere else you are on 4G/LTE.
At the busiest moments, such as Friday prayers, the last nights of Ramadan or the days of Hajj, huge numbers of people use their phones in the same small area. Mobile data can slow down at those times for everyone nearby. A few habits make a real difference:
- Download offline maps of Makkah and Madinah before you travel.
- Agree on a fixed meeting point with your group in case messages arrive late.
- Send important messages, such as your location or pick-up time, early rather than at the last minute.
- Save large downloads, photo backups and long video calls for the hotel Wi-Fi.
How much data for 10, 15 or 30 days
How much you need depends on how you use your phone. As a guide, light use (messages and maps) takes about 1 GB a week, regular use (photos, social media and some browsing) 3–5 GB a week, and heavy use (daily video calls, video or work) 10 GB or more a week. For a typical pilgrimage, that means roughly:
- 10 days: about 2 GB for light use, or 5–7 GB for regular use.
- 15 days: about 2–3 GB for light use, or 7–10 GB for regular use.
- 30 days: about 4–5 GB for light use, or 15–20 GB for regular use.
- Daily video calls with family: plan for 10 GB or more for each week of your stay.
If you run low, you can top up the same eSIM from the Check / Top up page, your HelloSIM account or the app, without installing anything again.
Keep your home number for bank codes and family
Banks and many online services send one-time passwords (OTPs) by SMS to your home number, and you may need them during the trip. HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only, so they do not replace your number. Your own SIM stays in the phone:
- Keep your home line switched on, so you can still receive SMS codes and calls.
- Turn data roaming off on the home line, so it does not use roaming data from your home operator. Your mobile data comes from the HelloSIM line instead.
- WhatsApp stays linked to your usual number, so your contacts and groups do not change.
- Check your tariff for any charges on incoming calls and texts while you are abroad.
Combining Saudi Arabia with other countries
Some pilgrims add a stop before or after their journey, for example in the UAE, Jordan, Egypt or Turkey. Instead of buying a separate eSIM for each country, you can use the Middle East & North Africa plan, which covers Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Turkey and more on one eSIM. Check the plan's country list before you buy so that every stop is included.

Is your phone ready for eSIM?
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Many recent models do, including iPhone XS, XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and many A models. To check, open Settings and look for an Add eSIM option.
Two more things to keep in mind:
- Many iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao use two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM, so check before you buy.
- One eSIM is installed on one phone. If you travel with family members, each phone needs its own eSIM.
Before you travel: step by step
- 1Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
- 2Choose a plan for Saudi Arabia, or the Middle East & North Africa plan if you will also visit other countries.
- 3Pay at checkout. You can buy as a guest with just your email address. The QR code is delivered by email straight away and is also in your HelloSIM account and the app.
- 4Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi. On iPhone, go to Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM and scan the QR code; on Android, look under Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. You can also enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email manually.
- 5While you are still on home Wi-Fi, update the apps you will need and download offline maps.
- 6Charge your power banks and pack your cables, because long days with maps, messages and the camera drain batteries quickly. Check your airline's rules for carrying power banks.
- 7After landing, switch on the HelloSIM line as described above.
Paying and getting help
You can pay with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay or your HelloSIM wallet balance. Prices are in euros, and your card or bank converts the amount into your own currency automatically.
If anything does not work, HelloSIM support is available on WhatsApp and by email at [email protected], and emails are answered within 24 hours. Save the support details on your phone before you leave, together with the email that contains your QR code.
