10 eSIM Myths Travellers Still Believe

Will an eSIM change your number, break WhatsApp or start ticking the day you buy it? Ten common eSIM myths, and what actually happens when you travel with one.

eSIMs have been around long enough to collect their own folklore. Some of it is out of date, some comes from mixing up travel eSIMs with phone contracts at home, and some is simply a reasonable guess that turns out to be wrong. Here are ten common ones, and what actually happens.

Myth 1: "A travel eSIM gives me a new phone number"

Not with a data-only eSIM. HelloSIM eSIMs provide mobile data only: there's no local number and no regular calls or SMS. Your own SIM stays in the phone, so your usual number keeps working for calls and texts, subject to your home carrier's roaming terms.

To talk to people, you use apps that run over data, such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or Viber. For most travellers that covers everything they'd normally do on the phone.

Myth 2: "My WhatsApp will switch to a different number"

WhatsApp is tied to the number you registered it with, not to whichever SIM happens to be supplying data. Adding a data-only eSIM changes nothing about your account: same number, same chats, same contacts. WhatsApp simply uses the eSIM's data connection to send and receive.

Myth 3: "The plan starts counting the day I buy it"

This one makes people leave it until the last minute, and it's unnecessary. A HelloSIM plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you pay and not when you install it. You can buy a week or two ahead, set everything up calmly, and the days begin only once you've landed and connected.

Myth 4: "I have to install it when I arrive"

The opposite works far better. The QR code arrives by email straight after payment, and it's also stored in your HelloSIM account and the app, so you can install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before the trip. On arrival, all that's left is to switch the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Leaving installation until you land means hunting for Wi-Fi when you're tired and in a hurry.

Myth 5: "Any smartphone can use an eSIM"

Two things are needed: the phone must support eSIM, and it must be carrier-unlocked. Most iPhones from the XS and XR onwards, Pixel phones from the Pixel 3 onwards and recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and many A models support it. The quickest check is to look in Settings for an "Add eSIM" option.

Watch out for one exception: many iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao have two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM.

Myth 6: "Turning on data roaming will land me with a huge bill"

There are two lines in your phone, and each has its own roaming switch. On the travel eSIM line, data roaming needs to be on, because the eSIM connects through local partner networks; since HelloSIM data is prepaid, switching it on doesn't cost anything extra.

The switch to watch is the one on your home line. Keep data roaming off there, and your home carrier has nothing to charge you for.

Myth 7: "When the data runs out, I need a new eSIM"

You don't. More data can be added to the eSIM you already have through the Check / Top up page, your HelloSIM account or the app. There's no new QR code and nothing to reinstall; the line simply carries on with the extra data.

Myth 8: "One eSIM can be shared between the family's phones"

An eSIM is installed on one phone, and that's where it stays. If four people are travelling and each wants mobile data on their own phone, each needs their own eSIM. Because the QR code is meant for a single installation, it isn't something to pass around either.

Myth 9: "A travel eSIM means 5G everywhere"

The network generation depends on the destination and your phone, not on the eSIM itself. HelloSIM plans run on 4G/LTE in every destination sold. 5G is available only where the networks listed for that destination are marked 5G, and only if your phone supports 5G. For maps, messaging, browsing and calls, 4G is what most trips run on anyway.

Myth 10: "eSIMs are less secure than SIM cards"

In one important way they're more secure: an eSIM can't be popped out of a stolen phone and put into another one, and it can't fall out of a wallet or get lost in a hotel room. The profile is downloaded through your phone's own Add eSIM process.

The sensible precautions are simple. Treat your QR code like a key, so don't post or share pictures of it; protect your phone with a passcode; and buy from a provider you trust, with real support behind it.

What's actually worth checking before you buy

Once the myths are out of the way, the real checklist is short:

  • Your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
  • Your destination, or every country on your route, is covered by the plan.
  • The data amount matches how you travel: about 1 GB a week for maps and messaging, 3–5 GB for regular social media and browsing, 10 GB or more for video and work.
  • You know where to get help: HelloSIM support answers by email at [email protected], within 24 hours, and through the live chat in the HelloSIM app.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM change my phone number?
A data-only travel eSIM like HelloSIM's doesn't give you a new number or replace your old one. Your home SIM stays in the phone, so your usual number keeps working for calls and texts.
Will WhatsApp still work with my normal number?
Yes. WhatsApp stays registered to your usual number and simply uses the eSIM's data connection, so your chats and contacts don't change.
Is an eSIM safe to use?
An eSIM can't be removed from a stolen phone and used elsewhere, which is one advantage over a plastic SIM. Keep your QR code private and protect your phone with a passcode.
When does a travel eSIM start counting days?
With HelloSIM, validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination. Buying or installing it before the trip doesn't use up any days.
Can I use one eSIM on two phones?
No, an eSIM is installed on one phone. Each traveller who wants mobile data on their own phone needs their own eSIM.
Do I need to buy a new eSIM if my data runs out?
No. You can add a top-up to the same eSIM from the Check / Top up page, your account or the app, without reinstalling it.
