When the schools close and the heat peaks, many families in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman head for cooler weather: London, Istanbul, the Georgian mountains, the Alps. Whether you're a citizen or an expat resident, this guide shows how to stay online on those trips with a travel eSIM, without giving up the home number your bank and your family rely on.
Roaming from the Gulf: what it usually costs
Gulf operators usually sell roaming as daily passes or as packs for a set number of days, and some packs include a group of countries. That works well for a weekend in Bahrain or Dubai, but a summer trip is different: four to six weeks abroad, a family with several phones, and everyone watching videos in the hotel room. Daily charges multiply by the number of days and by the number of lines, and they can add up fast.
Without a pack, pay-as-you-go data roaming can be very expensive. The classic surprise is a bill for apps that updated themselves on the first night. Some packs also leave out certain countries, so a trip that adds Georgia or Azerbaijan to Turkey may fall outside what you paid for. Check your current tariff before you travel, even for trips inside the GCC.
How a travel eSIM works
A HelloSIM eSIM is a digital SIM that you install by scanning a QR code. It is data-only: no local number and no regular calls or SMS. You use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or Viber for calls and messages, and your home SIM stays in the phone, so your usual number keeps working for calls and texts.
WhatsApp doesn't change either. It stays on your usual number, so family groups and business chats continue exactly as before.
You install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before the trip. The plan's days only start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install it a week early without losing any time. If you run low halfway through the summer, top up the same eSIM from the Check / Top up page, your account or the app; there's nothing to reinstall. Coverage is 4G/LTE everywhere HelloSIM sells, with 5G where the destination's listed networks are marked 5G and your phone supports it.

Popular destinations from the Gulf
United Kingdom
London is a summer classic: shopping in Knightsbridge, walks in Hyde Park, long family stays in serviced apartments. Switch the eSIM on as you land at Heathrow so you can order a car and share your location with relatives straight away. If you plan to drive to the countryside or to Scotland, download offline maps first, as signal can be weaker in remote valleys.
Turkey
Istanbul, Bursa, Trabzon and the green highlands near the Black Sea draw many Gulf families every summer. Turkey is a big country, so if you combine the city with a road trip to the mountain plateaus, keep offline maps ready for the long stretches between towns.

Georgia and Azerbaijan
Tbilisi, Batumi and the mountains of Georgia, and Baku in neighbouring Azerbaijan, are popular for short, cool summer breaks. For Georgia alone, a Georgia plan is enough. If you're visiting both countries, the Caucasus & Central Asia plan covers Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan on one eSIM.

Europe, several countries in one trip
A typical family summer might start in Switzerland, continue to Austria and finish in Paris or Italy. The Europe plan covers more than 40 countries, including Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Germany, the UK and Turkey, so one eSIM follows you through the whole itinerary.

Thailand and the Maldives
For winter breaks and honeymoons, Thailand and the Maldives are long-time favourites. Having your own data means you don't depend on resort Wi-Fi when you want to share photos or call home from the beach. If you combine the two, or add Malaysia or Singapore, the Asia Pacific plan covers all of them.
Travel within the GCC
Short trips between Gulf countries are common: Dubai from Riyadh, Bahrain from the Eastern Province, Muscat from Doha. The Middle East & North Africa plan covers Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain, plus Jordan, Egypt and Turkey, which suits frequent regional travellers.
Is your phone ready for eSIM?
The phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. iPhone XS, XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and many A models generally support it; check Settings for an "Add eSIM" option. If your phone came with an operator contract or an instalment plan, confirm that it isn't locked to that operator before the trip.
Watch out for phones bought on holiday. Many iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao use two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM, so if you or a family member bought one there, check before you buy a plan.
Finally, keep your home line ready for codes. Banks and many online services in the Gulf often send one-time codes by SMS. Leave your home SIM in the phone with its line on for SMS, and turn data roaming off on it so the HelloSIM line handles all your data. If you need to receive codes abroad, ask your operator whether roaming is active on your number.
Before you fly: step by step
- 1Confirm that each family member's phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
- 2Pick a country plan, or a regional plan for a multi-country summer.
- 3Pay and get the QR code by email straight away; it's also saved in your HelloSIM account and the app.
- 4At home on Wi-Fi, install it: on iPhone, Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM; on Android, Settings → Network & internet / Connections → SIMs / SIM manager → Add eSIM (names vary by brand). Manual installation with the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email also works.
- 5Give the new line a clear name such as "Travel" so you can tell the lines apart.
- 6On arrival, switch the HelloSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on Data Roaming for that line. It's required and costs nothing extra because the data is prepaid.
- 7Keep data roaming off on your home line so it can't use data abroad.
How much data to buy
- City break of a few days, mostly maps and messaging: light use is about 1 GB a week.
- Two-week holiday with social media, photos and browsing: plan on 3–5 GB a week.
- A long summer or heavy use, with video calls, streaming or remote work: 10 GB or more.
- Families: one eSIM is installed on one phone, so every phone that needs mobile data needs its own eSIM.
- Several weeks away: start with a plan for the first part of the trip, then top up the same eSIM as you go.
