eSIM for Travellers from Nigeria: Mobile Data in the UK, Dubai, Ghana and the USA

Travelling from Lagos or Abuja to London, Dubai, Accra or Houston? Learn how a travel eSIM gives you data abroad while your Nigerian line stays on for bank OTPs.

Whether you're flying from Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt to see family in London, do business in Dubai, spend December in Accra or visit relatives in Houston, the first thing you'll reach for after landing is your phone. This guide explains how roaming on a Nigerian SIM usually works, why a travel eSIM is a simpler way to get data abroad, and how to keep your Nigerian line ready for bank codes.

Roaming from Nigeria: what it usually costs

Nigerian networks usually sell international roaming as daily or weekly bundles, and the countries included can vary from one bundle to another. For a quick trip they can do the job. On a three-week summer visit to the UK or the USA, though, bundles bought day after day can add up fast.

Without a bundle, pay-as-you-go roaming can be very expensive: a few hours of maps, Instagram and voice notes on the home line can cost far more than you'd expect. Before you travel, check your current tariff and find out exactly which countries and how much data your bundle includes.

How a travel eSIM works

A travel eSIM is a SIM profile that you download, not a card that you insert. HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only, which means no local number and no regular calls or SMS. You make calls and send messages through WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or Viber, using the eSIM's data.

Your Nigerian SIM stays in the phone, so your number stays the same for calls and texts, and WhatsApp stays on the number your contacts already know.

The key points:

  • Set it up before the trip, at home on Wi-Fi, because downloading the eSIM needs an internet connection.
  • Your days begin at the destination. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network there, not on the day you pay.
  • Need more data? Top up the same eSIM from the Check / Top up page, your account or the HelloSIM app, with no new installation.
  • Network: 4G/LTE everywhere HelloSIM sells, with 5G only where the destination's listed networks are marked 5G and your phone supports it.

Popular destinations from Nigeria

United Kingdom

The UK is the top trip for many Nigerians: students starting university, families visiting relatives in London, Manchester or Birmingham, and summer holidays. Switch the eSIM on as you land at Heathrow or Gatwick so you can find your train or taxi and tell family you've arrived safely. If you're starting your studies, a travel eSIM keeps you connected through the first weeks while you settle in.

UAE

Dubai is a favourite for shopping, business and short holidays. Data helps with ride-hailing apps, maps in the big malls and the metro, and messages to suppliers or family. For a business trip with video meetings, choose more data than you would for a shopping weekend.

Ghana

Accra is a short flight from Lagos, and December is the busiest time, with concerts, beach parties and family gatherings. Plan for heavier use if you'll be posting videos and photos every day, and remember you can top up the same eSIM if the celebrations go on longer than planned.

USA

Houston, Atlanta, New York and Washington, D.C. have large Nigerian communities, so family visits and graduations bring many travellers every year. Distances are big, so you'll use maps and ride apps a lot. Download offline maps before long drives between cities.

Kenya, South Africa and other trips around Africa

A conference in Nairobi, a holiday in Cape Town, a safari, or a work trip that also takes in Johannesburg: for trips to Kenya, South Africa or both, the Africa regional plan keeps you on one eSIM. Safari lodges and national parks can be far from towns, where signal may be weak, so download maps and park information before you set off.

Is your phone ready for eSIM?

Your phone needs eSIM support and must be carrier-unlocked. iPhone XS, XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and many A models usually support it. Many budget Android phones popular in Nigeria have two physical SIM slots and no eSIM, so look in Settings for an "Add eSIM" option before you buy.

The Nigeria-specific catch is imported phones. Many iPhones and Samsung phones in Nigeria were first sold abroad, often as "UK used" or "US used". Some of them are still locked to the foreign network they came from; phones sold in the USA on instalment plans, for example, may stay carrier-locked until they are paid off. A locked phone can't use a HelloSIM eSIM, so ask the seller or check the phone's status before you travel. iPhones first sold in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao often have two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM, too.

Keep your Nigerian line ready for bank codes. Nigerian banks often send OTPs by SMS, so leave your Nigerian SIM in the phone with its line on for calls and SMS, and turn data roaming off on it. To receive SMS abroad, roaming usually needs to be active on your line, so check with your network before you leave.

Before you fly: step by step

  1. 1Confirm that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to any network.
  2. 2Choose the country you're visiting, or the Africa plan for a trip across several African countries.
  3. 3Complete checkout. The QR code comes to your email straight away and is saved in your HelloSIM account and app.
  4. 4On home Wi-Fi, add the eSIM: on iPhone, Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM; on Android, Settings → Network & internet / Connections → SIMs / SIM manager → Add eSIM (wording differs by brand). Manual setup with the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email works too.
  5. 5If you need bank SMS abroad, check with your Nigerian network that roaming is active on your line.
  6. 6After landing, turn the HelloSIM line on, pick it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming on it. It's needed and has no extra cost, as the data is prepaid.
  7. 7Keep data roaming off on your Nigerian line.

How much data to buy

  • Business trip to Dubai or Nairobi: email, maps and messaging are light use, about 1 GB a week; add more for video meetings.
  • Summer family visit to the UK or the USA: social media, browsing and photos are regular use, usually 3–5 GB a week.
  • December in Accra: daily videos and live posts can push you into heavy use, 10 GB or more.
  • Students and remote workers: video calls and large work files also mean 10 GB or more.
  • Group travel: one eSIM is installed on one phone, so each traveller needs their own.

Paying and getting help

You can pay with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay or your HelloSIM wallet balance. Prices are charged in euros (EUR) and your bank converts the amount automatically; the site can show prices in USD or GBP for reference. Some naira cards have limits on international online payments, so if your payment doesn't go through, check your card's international limit with your bank or use a card that allows foreign payments.

Guest checkout needs only your email address, and the QR code is delivered by email straight away. If you need help, contact support on WhatsApp or by email at [email protected]. Emails are answered within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use a travel eSIM or roaming on my Nigerian SIM?
For data, a travel eSIM lets you pay once for a set amount of data and days, with validity starting on arrival. Roaming bundles are usually priced per day or per bundle and can add up on longer trips, so check your current tariff.
Will I still get my bank OTPs abroad?
Keep your Nigerian SIM in the phone, with its line on for SMS and data roaming off. Confirm with your network that roaming is active on your line so SMS can reach you abroad.
Will my WhatsApp change to a new number?
No. WhatsApp stays tied to your Nigerian number; the eSIM simply provides the data connection.
Can I use a "UK used" or "US used" phone with an eSIM?
Yes, if it supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Some imported phones are still locked to their original network, so check before you buy a plan.
When should I install the eSIM?
Install it at home over Wi-Fi before you fly. Validity starts only when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination.
Which plan should I choose for Kenya and South Africa?
The Africa plan covers both on one eSIM, which suits multi-country trips. If you're only visiting one of them, a country plan is enough.
