If you're flying out of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Chennai for a holiday, a work trip or a family visit, mobile data is usually the first thing you need on landing: for a cab, for maps, for hotel check-in and for a quick WhatsApp message home. This guide explains how roaming on an Indian SIM usually works, how a travel eSIM replaces it for data, and how to keep your Indian number working for UPI and bank OTPs while you're away.
Roaming from India: what it usually costs
Indian operators sell international roaming packs that are usually priced per day or as a fixed pack for a set number of days and countries. For a three-day business trip that can be fine. On a ten-day Europe tour or a two-week holiday in Thailand, though, daily packs add up fast, and the data inside them can run out sooner than you expect.
The bigger surprise tends to come from pay-as-you-go roaming. If you land without a pack and the phone quietly starts using data on your Indian line, a photo backup, an app update or a video someone forwards you can make the bill very expensive. Packs also differ by country, so the one that covers Dubai may not cover a stopover somewhere else. Before any trip, check your current tariff with your operator so you know exactly what applies.
How a travel eSIM works
A travel eSIM is a digital SIM that you download to your phone with a QR code. A HelloSIM eSIM is data-only: it gives you mobile internet at your destination but no local phone number and no regular calls or SMS. You call and message over data apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or Viber.
Your Indian SIM stays in the phone, so your number doesn't change, and WhatsApp stays linked to your usual number. Your chats and groups carry on as normal.
A few points make planning easy:
- Install before you fly. Set it up at home over Wi-Fi a day or two before departure.
- Validity starts on arrival. The days start counting when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not on the day you buy it.
- Top up the same eSIM. If you need more data mid-trip, add it from the Check / Top up page, your HelloSIM account or the app, with no reinstalling.
- 4G/LTE everywhere HelloSIM sells, and 5G where the networks listed for that destination are marked 5G and your phone supports it.

Popular destinations from India
UAE
Dubai and Abu Dhabi are among the most common short trips from India, whether for shopping, a long weekend, the Diwali break or visiting relatives who work there. Install your eSIM before the flight and switch it on as the plane lands, so you can book a ride and message family from the arrivals hall.
Thailand
Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya and Krabi are favourites for honeymoons, friends' trips and New Year breaks. If you're island hopping, download offline maps of the islands before you leave the hotel, because signal can be weaker on boats and on remote beaches.

Singapore
Singapore is a popular family holiday during the summer school break in May and June, and a frequent business trip all year. It's a compact city where you'll use maps, transport apps and food delivery constantly, so plan for regular use rather than light use. Many travellers combine it with Malaysia, which the Asia Pacific plan covers too.

Europe
A Europe tour often covers several countries in ten or twelve days: Paris, Switzerland, Italy, and perhaps London at the end. Instead of buying a separate SIM in each country, one Europe plan covers more than 40 countries, including France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, so you stay connected as the coach crosses borders.

Bali, Vietnam and Malaysia
For a trip that combines Bali with Singapore, or Vietnam with Malaysia, the Asia Pacific plan covers more than 30 destinations, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, on a single eSIM. It suits backpacking routes and multi-stop holidays where you would otherwise need a new SIM at every border.
Is your phone ready for eSIM?
Your phone needs two things: eSIM support and a carrier-unlocked status. iPhone XS, XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and many A models support eSIM. Many budget and mid-range Android phones sold in India have two physical SIM slots but no eSIM, so check your Settings for an "Add eSIM" option before you buy. If your iPhone was bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao, check as well, because many of those models use two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM.
The India-specific point is your home SIM. UPI apps and Indian banks often rely on SMS: one-time passwords for card payments, login codes, and checks that the registered SIM is in your phone. So don't remove your Indian SIM. Keep that line switched on for calls and SMS, and turn data roaming off on it, so only the HelloSIM line uses mobile data. To receive SMS abroad, international roaming usually needs to be active on your Indian number, so check with your operator before you leave, as charges can apply.
Before you fly: step by step
- 1Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
- 2Choose a plan for your destination, or a regional plan if you're visiting several countries.
- 3Pay and receive your QR code by email straight away; it's also in your HelloSIM account and the app.
- 4At home, on Wi-Fi, go to Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM on iPhone, or Settings → Network & internet / Connections → SIMs / SIM manager → Add eSIM on Android (wording varies by brand), and scan the QR code. You can also enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email manually.
- 5Name the new line "HelloSIM" so it's easy to recognise, and keep your Indian line set for calls and SMS.
- 6After landing, switch the HelloSIM line on, set it as the line for mobile data and turn on Data Roaming for the HelloSIM line. It's needed, and there's no extra cost because the data is prepaid.
- 7Turn data roaming off on your Indian line to avoid roaming charges from your home operator.
How much data to buy
- Light use, such as maps, messaging and the odd email: about 1 GB a week.
- Regular use, such as social media, browsing, sharing photos and a few WhatsApp calls home: 3–5 GB a week.
- Heavy use, such as video calls, streaming or working on a laptop: 10 GB or more.
- Family trips: one eSIM is installed on one phone, so each person who needs their own data needs their own eSIM.
- Not sure? Pick the plan that matches your usual habits and top up the same eSIM if you run low.
Paying and getting help
You can pay with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay or your HelloSIM wallet balance. Prices are charged in euros (EUR) and your bank converts the amount to rupees automatically; the site can also show prices in USD for reference. Some Indian cards need international or online transactions switched on in the bank's app before they work on a foreign website, so check that first if a payment is declined.
Checkout works as a guest with just your email address, and an account is optional. If anything goes wrong during installation or after you land, contact support on WhatsApp or by email at [email protected]. Emails are answered within 24 hours.
