Why getting around Ecuador is easier than you think

Ecuador is compact, so you can pair Andean highlands, Amazon and Pacific coast in one trip. Distances are short, roads have improved, and buses reach almost everywhere cheaply.

Intercity buses: the backbone of travel

Long-distance buses are how most Ecuadorians travel. Major terminals include Quitumbe and Carcelen in Quito and the big terminal in Guayaquil. Companies like Reina del Camino, Transportes Ecuador and Panamericana run frequent routes.

• Quito to Guayaquil: 8-9 hours, around USD 10-12
• Buy at the counter; on busy routes (holidays) book ahead
• Keep valuables in your lap, not overhead, and watch bags at stops

The Quito Metro

Quito's Metro de Quito (Line 1) opened to the public and runs from Quitumbe in the south to El Labrador in the north, with 15 stations. It is fast, clean and avoids the city's notorious traffic. A single ride is about USD 0.45. Pair it with the older Trolebus and Ecovia bus-rapid-transit corridors.

Ride-hailing apps

Uber, Cabify and inDrive operate in Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca. They are cheaper and safer than flagging a street taxi. Registered yellow taxis have meters (taximetro) and red panic-button stickers — insist the meter runs.

Car rental and driving

Renting a car suits the coast, the Quilotoa loop and the Avenue of Volcanoes. Hertz, Avis and Localiza operate at airports.

Trains and scenic routes

For the Galapagos or quick Quito-Coca hops, fly with Avianca or LATAM. Galapagos flights leave from Quito and Guayaquil to Baltra or San Cristobal.
