Summer (June to August): peak season

Summer is Estonia at its best. Days are long, with up to 19 hours of daylight around the June solstice and the magical white nights when it never gets fully dark. Temperatures average 17 to 22 degrees Celsius, occasionally hitting the high 20s.

• Jaanipaev (Midsummer, 23 to 24 June) is the biggest celebration of the year, with bonfires, singing and countryside parties.
• Tallinn's medieval Old Town, beaches at Parnu and the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa are at their liveliest.
• This is peak season, so book hotels in Tallinn and Parnu well ahead and expect higher prices.

Shoulder seasons (May and September): the sweet spot

Late spring and early autumn are ideal for many travellers. The weather is mild (12 to 18 degrees), crowds thin out and prices drop.

Autumn and winter (October to March)

Winter is cold and dark, with temperatures often below freezing and snow common from December to March. Daylight shrinks to around six hours in December.

• Try cross-country skiing in Otepaa or saunas across the country.
• The Song and Dance Celebration, a UNESCO-listed festival, returns roughly every five years (next major editions in summer).
