Ethiopia Travel Budget: Daily Costs and Money-Saving Tips

What does a trip to Ethiopia really cost? Realistic daily budgets, sample prices for food, transport and hotels, plus money and card advice.

How much does Ethiopia cost per day?

Ethiopia is one of Africa's more affordable destinations, but prices vary a lot between Addis Ababa and rural areas. Here are realistic daily budgets per person (excluding international flights):

  • Backpacker: 25-40 USD a day
  • Mid-range: 50-90 USD a day
  • Comfort/tours: 120 USD and up

Guided trips to the Danakil Depression or the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela push costs higher because of mandatory guides and 4x4 transport.

Sample prices

  • Plate of injera with shiro or tibs at a local place: 150-350 birr
  • Macchiato coffee in a cafe: 30-60 birr
  • Local SIM data and a beer (St. George or Habesha): around 70-120 birr
  • Budget guesthouse double room: 700-1,500 birr
  • Mid-range hotel in Addis: 2,500-5,000 birr
  • Long-distance bus (e.g. Addis to Bahir Dar): 800-1,400 birr
  • City taxi or ride-hailing (Feres, ZayRide) short hop: 150-400 birr

Money and cards

The currency is the Ethiopian birr (ETB). Ethiopia is overwhelmingly a cash country. Cards are accepted only at larger hotels and a few Addis restaurants, and foreign-card ATMs (Dashen, Awash, CBE) are common in cities but unreliable elsewhere. Always carry cash for the regions.

  • Bring clean USD or EUR notes to exchange at banks or your hotel.
  • Use official exchange only; black-market rates are illegal and risky.
  • Withdraw larger amounts in Addis before heading to Lalibela, Gondar or the Omo Valley.
  • Keep small birr notes for tips, tuk-tuks (bajaj) and markets.

Tips to save money

  • Eat where locals eat; a fasting (beyaynetu) veggie plate is cheap and excellent.
  • Take the train from Addis to Dire Dawa or shared buses instead of flights when time allows.
  • Domestic flights on Ethiopian Airlines are far cheaper if you also flew in on their international flight.
  • Negotiate bajaj and taxi fares before getting in.
  • Travel in the dry season (October-March) but book Lalibela early for Genna (Christmas).
