When to go
The best time to visit Ethiopia is the dry season, from October to early March, when skies are clear, roads are passable, and the iconic festivals fall. This is peak season for the historic northern circuit of Lalibela, Gondar and Axum, and for trekking in the Simien Mountains.
Understanding the seasons
Ethiopia sits near the equator but is mostly high-altitude plateau, so temperatures are mild year-round rather than tropical. Two rainy seasons shape the calendar:
- Kiremt (the big rains): mid-June to September, heaviest in July and August. Highland roads turn muddy and some lodges close, but the countryside is stunningly green.
- Belg (the small rains): February to April, short afternoon showers.
- Dry season: October to May in most regions, the prime window for travel.
In the lowlands it is a different story. The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest places on Earth, regularly topping 45C; visit only between November and February.
Peak vs shoulder season
Peak (October to January) brings the best weather and the biggest festivals, but higher prices in Lalibela and Gondar and busy flights. Book the Ethiopian Airlines historic-route hops early.
Shoulder (October and late February to March) offers green-tinged landscapes, thinner crowds and softer rates while the weather still holds.
Festivals by month
- September: Enkutatash, Ethiopian New Year, marks the end of the rains with yellow Meskel daisies blanketing the highlands.
- Late September: Meskel, the Finding of the True Cross, with huge bonfires (Demera) in Addis Ababa's Meskel Square.
- January: Timkat (Ethiopian Epiphany, around 19 January) is the spectacular highlight, especially in Gondar, where processions and ritual bathing reenact Christ's baptism.
- November to January: ideal trekking and wildlife viewing in the Bale Mountains.
- Late April to May: Fasika (Orthodox Easter), a moving but powerful religious occasion.
Note Ethiopia uses its own calendar, roughly seven to eight years behind the Gregorian one, and a 13-month year, so double-check festival dates locally.
