Best Time to Visit Finland: Seasons, Weather & Festivals

From the Midnight Sun to the Northern Lights, here is when to visit Finland for the weather, prices, and events that matter to you.

When to go

Finland is a year-round destination, but the right month depends on what you want: endless summer daylight, snowy Lapland adventures, or quieter shoulder-season travel. The country spans nearly 1,200 km north to south, so Helsinki and Rovaniemi can feel like different worlds.

Summer (June to August) — peak season

Summer is the most popular time to visit. In June and July the south enjoys long, mild days around 20 to 25 C, while above the Arctic Circle the Midnight Sun keeps the sky bright 24 hours a day. Lakes are warm enough to swim, and the archipelago and Lakeland (around Savonlinna and Lake Saimaa) shine.

Key summer events:

  • Juhannus (Midsummer), late June — Finland's biggest celebration, with bonfires and lakeside cottages
  • Savonlinna Opera Festival, July, staged in a medieval castle
  • Ruisrock in Turku and Flow Festival in Helsinki (August)

Expect higher prices and booked-out cottages; reserve well ahead.

Autumn (September to October) — shoulder season

The ruska (autumn foliage) sets Lapland ablaze in red and gold, ideal for hiking in places like Saariselka. Crowds thin, prices drop, and from late August the Northern Lights become visible again on clear nights. Pack layers; temperatures cool quickly.

Winter (November to March) — Lapland season

This is prime time for the Aurora Borealis, husky and reindeer sledding, and visiting Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi. December brings festive markets; February and March offer the most reliable snow and slightly more daylight for skiing. Southern Finland is cold (often -5 to -15 C) but Lapland can drop far lower.

  • Helsinki Christmas Market at Senate Square, December
  • Skabmagovat and other Sami winter events in the far north

Spring (April to May) — quiet and good value

Snow lingers in the north for late-season skiing, while the south thaws. May brings Vappu (May Day), a joyful student celebration. Fewer tourists mean lower fares, though some seasonal services pause between winter and summer.

Quick picks

  • Northern Lights: September to March
  • Midnight Sun: June to July
  • Best value: April to May and late September
  • Snow activities: December to March
