When to go to Egypt
Egypt is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the season. The country has a hot desert climate, so the real question is how much heat you can handle while exploring temples, deserts, and the Nile.
Winter (December to February): peak season
This is the most popular time to visit. Days are warm and comfortable, ideal for sightseeing.
- Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza: pleasant 18-22C days, cool nights
- Luxor and Aswan: warm and dry, perfect for the Valley of the Kings and Karnak
- Red Sea resorts (Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh): mild and sunny
Expect higher prices and busy sites. Book Nile cruises and Abu Simbel trips well ahead, especially around Christmas, New Year, and the Abu Simbel Sun Festival on 22 February, when sunlight illuminates the inner sanctuary.
Spring (March to May): shoulder season
A great balance of good weather and fewer crowds. Temperatures climb but remain manageable through April.
- Watch for the khamsin, hot dusty winds that can blow in spring
- Sham El-Nessim, an ancient Egyptian spring festival, falls the Monday after Coptic Easter
Summer (June to August): low season
Upper Egypt is extremely hot, with Luxor and Aswan regularly above 40C. Sightseeing is best at dawn.
- Best for Red Sea diving and beaches, where sea breezes ease the heat
- The Mediterranean coast (Alexandria, Marsa Matrouh) stays cooler and lively
- Lowest prices for inland temples if you can handle the heat
Autumn (September to November): shoulder season
Heat fades and crowds thin out. October and November are excellent for combining desert, Nile, and sea.
- Comfortable temple visits return by late October
- Diving visibility in the Red Sea is superb
Festivals worth planning around
- Abu Simbel Sun Festival: 22 February and 22 October
- Sham El-Nessim: spring, after Coptic Easter
- Ramadan: dates shift yearly; some hours change but evenings come alive with festive food and lights
Quick recommendation
For the best all-round trip, aim for late October to early March. For beach and diving with bargain prices, summer on the Red Sea works well.
