There is no single perfect month for Vietnam, because the country stretches across several climate zones. When the north is chilly and grey, the south is dry and sunny; when the central coast is soaked by autumn storms, Hanoi enjoys its loveliest weather. The trick is matching your route to the season.

Three regions, three climates
Broadly, the north has four seasons including a cool winter, the central coast has a long dry spell followed by a stormy autumn, and the south stays hot all year with distinct wet and dry seasons. The far northern mountains and the Central Highlands around Da Lat are cooler than the lowlands whatever the month.
Northern Vietnam: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa
- Spring (March to April): mild and pleasant, though often humid and misty.
- Summer (May to September): hot, sticky and the wettest time of year. Storms can occasionally halt Ha Long Bay cruises for a day or two.
- Autumn (late September to November): dry, clear and comfortable, widely considered the best time for Hanoi and the bays. The rice terraces around Sapa turn gold in September before the harvest.
- Winter (December to February): cool and often grey in Hanoi, and cold enough in Sapa for frost on the peaks, so pack warm layers.
Central Vietnam: Hue, Hoi An and Da Nang
The central coast is at its best from about February to August. Spring brings warm, settled days ideal for sightseeing in Hue, while summer is hot, sunny and perfect for the beaches of Da Nang and Hoi An.
From around September to December, heavy rain and occasional typhoons arrive, with October and November usually the wettest months. Hoi An's riverside old town is prone to flooding at this time, and boat trips or cave visits in Phong Nha may be suspended, so keep your plans flexible if you travel then.
Southern Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc
The south is warm year-round. The dry season runs roughly from December to April, with March to May usually the hottest stretch. The rainy season, from about May to November, rarely ruins a trip: showers tend to be heavy but short, often arriving in the afternoon, and the Mekong Delta is at its greenest. Phu Quoc is best from about November to April, when the sea on its west coast is calmer.
Festivals and holidays to plan around
- Tet (Lunar New Year, late January or February): the biggest event of the year. Streets fill with peach blossom and kumquat trees beforehand, but transport sells out, prices climb and many family-run businesses close for several days.
- Hoi An full-moon nights: on the fourteenth day of each lunar month the old town traditionally switches to lantern light, and people float candle lanterns on the river.
- 30 April and 1 May: Reunification Day and Labour Day create a long weekend when domestic beach resorts fill up.
- Mid-Autumn Festival (September or October): children parade with lanterns and bakeries sell mooncakes, and Hanoi's Old Quarter is especially festive.
- National Day (2 September): flags everywhere and busy roads around the long weekend.
Crowds, prices and the best all-round months
International visitors arrive in the greatest numbers from December to March, especially around Christmas and New Year. Vietnamese families head for the beaches in the summer school holidays, roughly June to August, which pushes up hotel rates along the coast. Book early for these periods and for Tet.
If you want one trip covering the north, centre and south, March and April are often the best compromise: Hanoi is mild, the central coast is dry and the south has not yet hit its peak heat. Late September to November also works well if you skip or shorten the central coast.
