The Best Time to Visit Albania: A Month-by-Month Guide

From sun-soaked Riviera summers to quiet, golden autumns, here is when to visit Albania for beaches, hiking, festivals and the best value.

When to go to Albania

Albania packs Mediterranean beaches, alpine peaks and ancient cities into one small country, so the right time to visit depends on what you want. The short answer: late May to June and September to early October are the sweet spots for warm weather, swimmable seas and far smaller crowds than July and August.

The seasons at a glance

  • Spring (April to June): Wildflowers across the Llogara Pass, green hills and mild 18 to 25C days. Sea warms up by June. Ideal for hiking in Theth and the Albanian Alps.
  • Summer (July to August): Peak season. The Riviera towns of Ksamil, Dhermi and Himare are hot (30 to 35C) and busy. Book accommodation early and expect higher prices.
  • Autumn (September to October): Arguably the best all-rounder. Warm seas, cheaper stays, grape and olive harvests, and golden light over Berat and Gjirokaster.
  • Winter (November to March): Quiet and cool on the coast (8 to 14C), with snow and skiing potential around Dardha and the northern mountains.

Peak vs shoulder season

July and August bring the liveliest beach scene but also the highest costs and packed ferries to Ksamil and Corfu. The shoulder seasons give you 25C days, calm water and room to breathe. A simple guesthouse on the Riviera can cost roughly half of August rates in late September.

Festivals and events by month

  • March: Dita e Veres (Summer Day) on 14 March, a pagan-rooted spring festival centred on Elbasan.
  • May to June: Outdoor concerts and the start of the coastal season.
  • July: Tirana and Riviera beach parties; open-air cinema and music nights in Dhermi.
  • August: Gjirokaster and folk gatherings; the busiest cultural calendar.
  • September: Wine and harvest season inland; pleasant city sightseeing.
  • November: Independence Day (28 November) and Liberation Day (29 November) with parades in Tirana and Vlore.

Quick picks by interest

  • Beaches: June or September for warm, uncrowded water.
  • Hiking the Alps: June to early October; Theth to Valbona is best July to September.
  • Cities and culture: April, May or October for cool, comfortable walking.
  • Budget travel: Late September to October for low prices and good weather.
