How much does Albania cost?
Albania is one of Europe's best-value destinations. The currency is the Albanian lek (ALL), with roughly 100 lek to 1 euro. Prices in Tirana, Saranda and along the Riviera run higher than in rural areas, but even the coast stays affordable compared to neighbouring Greece or Italy.
Daily budgets
- Backpacker: 25-40 EUR per day. Hostel dorm, street food like byrek and qofte, buses and free beaches.
- Mid-range: 50-90 EUR per day. A private guesthouse or 3-star hotel, restaurant meals, the odd taxi and a day trip.
- Comfort: 120 EUR and up. Boutique hotels in Tirana or Riviera resorts, car hire and guided tours.
Sample prices
- Espresso: 80-150 ALL (0.80-1.50 EUR)
- Byrek slice: 50-100 ALL
- Dinner with wine for two: 2,000-4,000 ALL (20-40 EUR)
- Local beer (Korca, Tirana): 150-300 ALL
- Hostel dorm bed: 1,000-1,800 ALL
- Furgon (minibus) Tirana to Saranda: around 1,200-1,500 ALL
- City taxi ride: 400-700 ALL
- Berat or Gjirokaster castle entry: 200-400 ALL
Money and cards
Albania is still largely a cash economy. Carry lek for cafes, markets, furgons and small guesthouses. Cards work in Tirana hotels, supermarkets and bigger restaurants, but rural areas often refuse them. Withdraw from bank-branded ATMs (Credins, BKT, Raiffeisen) and decline the machine's currency conversion to get a fairer rate. Watch for ATMs charging high fixed fees; Credins is usually cheaper.
Saving tips
- Eat where locals eat. A full meal at a qebaptore costs a fraction of a tourist-strip restaurant.
- Use furgons and buses instead of taxis between towns; they are cheap and frequent.
- Travel in June or September to dodge peak Riviera prices and crowds.
- Drink tap water in cities where safe, or refill large bottles from shops.
- Negotiate guesthouse rates for stays of several nights, especially off-season.
- Buy fruit, cheese and bread from markets for beach picnics.
