Getting Around Algeria: Trains, Buses, Metro & Car Rental Guide

How to travel across Algeria like a local: the Algiers metro and tram, SNTF trains, intercity buses, taxis, ride apps like Yassir, and renting a car.

Getting around Algeria

Algeria is huge, the largest country in Africa, so distances between cities like Algiers, Oran, Constantine and Annaba are long. The good news is that the northern coastal corridor is well connected by train, bus and shared taxi, and Algiers itself has a clean modern metro.

Trains (SNTF)

The national railway SNTF runs the most useful lines along the coast and inland.

  • The flagship Coradia (Autorail) services link Algiers with Oran (about 4 hours) and Algiers with Constantine and Annaba.
  • Buy tickets at the station or via the SNTF website; fares are cheap, often under 1,500 DA for medium routes.
  • Trains are comfortable and scenic but can be delayed, so leave buffer time.

Algiers metro and tram

The Algiers Metro opened in 2011 and is fast, air-conditioned and safe. A single ticket costs around 50 DA. There are also modern tramways in Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Ouargla and Sidi Bel Abbes.

Buses and coaches

Intercity coaches are the backbone of long-distance travel. Companies operate from the main bus station (gare routiere); in Algiers the huge Gare Routiere du Caroubier serves most destinations. Buses are cheap and frequent, though schedules can be informal.

Shared taxis (taxi collectif)

For intercity hops, shared taxis (yellow Mercedes or Dacia) leave when full from designated lots. They are faster than buses and only slightly more expensive, a classic Algerian way to travel.

Ride apps and city taxis

  • Yassir is the dominant ride-hailing app in Algeria, used in Algiers, Oran and Constantine for cars and even deliveries.
  • Heetch also operates in Algiers.
  • Regular taxis are metered in theory; agree the fare first if the meter is off.

Car rental and driving

Renting a car gives freedom for the south and Kabylie mountains. Major agencies and local firms operate at Algiers Houari Boumediene Airport. Drive on the right, carry your passport and permit, and note that fuel is very cheap. Roads are good along the coast but rougher in the Sahara, where a 4x4 and a guide are recommended.

Practical tips

  • Carry cash in dinars; cards are rarely accepted for transport.
  • Friday is the weekend, so schedules thin out.
  • Learn a few words of Arabic or French, both are widely understood.
