The Best Time to Visit the Netherlands: A Season-by-Season Guide

Tulips in spring, festivals in summer, quiet museums in autumn and cosy lights in winter: when to visit the Netherlands, with weather, crowds and key events.

There's no bad time to visit the Netherlands, but each season offers a very different trip. The weather is mild and changeable all year, so the real decision is what you want to see and how many other visitors you're happy to share it with.

The Dutch weather in brief

The Netherlands has a maritime climate: rarely very hot, rarely very cold and often breezy. Rain can fall in any month, usually as passing showers rather than all-day downpours. Summer highs are typically around 20 to 23°C, while winter days hover around 5 to 7°C. Whatever the season, pack layers and a waterproof.

Spring (March to May): tulips and King's Day

Spring is the most popular season, and for good reason. The bulb fields between Haarlem and Leiden burst into colour, with tulips usually peaking around mid to late April, and Keukenhof is open for its short season.

  • King's Day (Koningsdag) on 27 April, or the 26th when the 27th falls on a Sunday, turns the country orange with street parties, boat parades and flea markets. Amsterdam gets extremely crowded.
  • Liberation Day on 5 May brings open-air festivals to many cities.
  • Accommodation prices rise and weekends are busy, so book early.

Summer (June to August): long days and festivals

Summer brings the longest days, with daylight lingering until around 10pm near midsummer, and the warmest weather for beaches such as Scheveningen and Zandvoort.

  • Outdoor terraces, canal-side drinks and cycling are at their best.
  • Big events include the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam in July and Pride Amsterdam, with its Canal Parade, in early August.
  • July and August are school-holiday months across Europe, so crowds and room rates peak in Amsterdam, while some small local businesses close for a few weeks.
  • Early summer is also when the new-season herring arrives.

Autumn (September to November): calmer and cosier

September often brings settled, pleasant weather and far fewer tourists. By October and November the days shorten and rain becomes more frequent, but museums, brown cafés and golden parks make up for it.

  • Amsterdam Dance Event in October fills the city's clubs and venues.
  • Hotel rates generally ease after the summer, except during big events.
  • Expect windy, wet days by November and plan indoor backups.

Winter (December to February): lights and local traditions

Winter is cold, grey and short on daylight, but it's usually the most affordable and least crowded time to visit, and the Dutch do cosy very well.

  • Sinterklaas arrives in mid-November, and for many Dutch families the evening of 5 December is a bigger occasion than Christmas.
  • Christmas markets pop up in many cities, with Maastricht and the caves at Valkenburg among the most atmospheric.
  • The Amsterdam Light Festival fills the canals with illuminated artworks through the darkest weeks.
  • New Year's Eve means oliebollen and fireworks. Canals occasionally freeze hard enough to skate on, though this is rare these days.
  • Southern cities such as Maastricht celebrate carnival in February or early March.

Which season suits you?

  • First-timers and flower lovers: mid-April to early May.
  • Beach and festival fans: June to August, booked well ahead.
  • Museum lovers and budget travellers: September to early November, or January and February.
  • Festive atmosphere: December, especially in the south.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit the Netherlands?
Late April and May are hard to beat for tulips, mild weather and King's Day. September offers good weather with noticeably fewer crowds.
When is tulip season in the Netherlands?
Tulips usually bloom from late March to mid-May, often peaking around mid to late April. Exact timing depends on the weather each year.
Is the Netherlands worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you like museums, cosy cafés and festive lights. Days are short and cold, but crowds are thin and accommodation is often better value.
How rainy is the Netherlands?
Rain can fall in any month, usually as passing showers. A waterproof jacket is more practical than an umbrella because of the wind.
