Portugal is a year-round destination, but the experience changes a lot with the seasons. Summer means beaches and festivals, spring and autumn are ideal for cities and walking, and winter offers mild, quiet days at lower prices.
Portugal's climate at a glance
The south is warmer and drier, the north greener and wetter, and the inland Alentejo and Douro have the hottest summers. Along the west coast the Atlantic stays cool even in August, while the Algarve's south-facing beaches are a little warmer. Madeira is mild all year, and the Azores have changeable, oceanic weather where sun and showers can arrive within the same hour.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the loveliest times to visit. The countryside turns green, wildflowers cover the Alentejo and the Algarve, and city temperatures are comfortable for long days on foot. Expect some rain in March and April, especially in the north, and a sea that is still too cold for most swimmers.
Notable dates include Holy Week, when Braga stages its famous processions, and 25 April, Freedom Day. Thousands of pilgrims travel to Fátima around 12 to 13 May, and Madeira holds its Flower Festival in spring. Prices and crowds rise gradually towards June.
Summer (June to August)
Summer brings reliable sunshine and long evenings. Lisbon and the coast are usually warm rather than scorching thanks to Atlantic breezes, but the interior can get very hot, and heatwaves are part of the season. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months, particularly on the Algarve, so book accommodation and car hire well ahead.
June is festival month. Lisbon celebrates Santo António on the night of 12 to 13 June, Porto's São João fills the streets on the night of 23 to 24 June, and 10 June is Portugal Day. In August, many villages hold their own festas, and 15 August is a national holiday.
Autumn (September to November)
September is a favourite with experienced travellers: the sea is at its warmest, the days are still hot and the summer crowds thin out after the first couple of weeks. It's also harvest time in the Douro Valley, when vineyards are at their busiest and most photogenic.
October is usually pleasant with the first proper rains, and big-wave season begins at Nazaré around this time. On 11 November, St Martin's Day is marked with roasted chestnuts and new wine. November is wetter and quieter, with low prices outside the main cities.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is mild in Lisbon and the Algarve, with plenty of bright days between rainy spells, while Porto and the north are cooler and noticeably wetter. Snow sometimes falls in the Serra da Estrela mountains. Apart from Christmas and New Year, this is the quietest and most affordable season. Madeira's New Year's Eve fireworks are famous, almond trees blossom across the Algarve in late January and February, and Carnival brings parades to towns such as Loulé, Torres Vedras and Ovar. Some seasonal Algarve restaurants and beach businesses close until spring.

Stay connected in Portugal
Whatever the season, live information makes a difference: checking the forecast before a Douro day, reading sea conditions before an Algarve boat trip and finding last-minute rooms during busy festival nights. With a HelloSIM eSIM you get data rather than a local number, so calls go through apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime. It installs before you leave, and its validity only starts when it first connects in Portugal, so setting it up early costs you no days. Planning to continue into Spain?
