Lithuania Travel Budget: Daily Costs and Money-Saving Tips

What does a trip to Lithuania really cost? Real daily budgets for Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda, sample prices, card tips and ways to save.

How much does Lithuania cost?

Lithuania is one of the better-value corners of the eurozone. Prices in Vilnius are noticeably lower than in Western Europe, and smaller cities like Kaunas, Klaipeda and Siauliai cost even less. Lithuania uses the euro, and card payments are accepted almost everywhere.

Daily budgets

Rough per-person, per-day estimates (excluding flights):

  • Budget backpacker: 40-55 EUR. Hostel dorm, supermarket food, walking, public transport.
  • Mid-range traveler: 80-130 EUR. Three-star hotel or private room, restaurant meals, a museum or two.
  • Comfort: 180 EUR and up. Boutique hotel, taxis, guided tours and nicer dining.

Sample prices

  • Cup of coffee: 2.50-3.50 EUR
  • Local beer (0.5L) in a bar: 3.50-5 EUR
  • Cepelinai (potato dumplings) main: 7-10 EUR
  • Three-course dinner for two with wine: 50-70 EUR
  • Vilnius public transport single ticket: 1 EUR (via Ziogas app or card)
  • Vilnius airport bus/train to centre: about 1 EUR
  • Hostel dorm bed: 15-25 EUR
  • Mid-range double room: 60-100 EUR
  • Taxi (Bolt) across central Vilnius: 4-7 EUR
  • Museum entry (e.g. MO Museum): 6-9 EUR

Money and cards

Lithuania is highly cashless. Visa and Mastercard work everywhere, and contactless and Apple/Google Pay are standard, even at market stalls. Carry a little cash for tiny rural cafes and some public toilets. Use ATMs from major banks like Swedbank or SEB; avoid Euronet machines, which add poor exchange rates and fees. Always choose to be charged in euros, not your home currency, to dodge dynamic currency conversion.

Ways to save

  • Eat the lunch special. Many restaurants offer a *dienos pietus* (lunch of the day) for 5-8 EUR.
  • Shop at Maxima, Iki or Lidl for picnic supplies; Lithuanian rye bread, kefir and cheese are cheap.
  • Use Bolt for affordable rides and scooters instead of street taxis.
  • Walk the old towns. Vilnius and Kaunas old towns are compact, scenic and free.
  • Visit free sights: Hill of Crosses near Siauliai, Trakai lakeside, and many churches cost nothing.
  • Travel intercity by bus. Lux Express and Kautra buses between Vilnius and Kaunas start around 6-8 EUR.
  • Drink tap water, which is safe and good.
