When to go to Luxembourg
Luxembourg is small but surprisingly varied, with a mild oceanic climate that keeps summers comfortable and winters rarely brutal. The short answer for most travellers: late May to September for warm weather and long days, or December for the Christmas markets. Each season has its own character.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is the locals' favourite. The Mullerthal trails dry out, the vineyards along the Moselle turn green, and parks across Luxembourg City bloom. Temperatures climb from around 10C in March to a pleasant 18C by May.
- Octave (late April to early May): a centuries-old Catholic pilgrimage that fills the capital with stalls and the famous Mäertchen market on Place Guillaume II.
- Quiet trails and hotel rates well below summer prices.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is peak season. Days are long, café terraces in the Grund spill over, and the Moselle wine villages buzz. Highs sit around 23-25C, though heatwaves can push past 30C.
- National Day (23 June): the country's biggest party, with fireworks over the Adolphe Bridge the night before and a torchlight parade.
- Schueberfouer (late August to early September): a huge funfair dating to 1340, with rides, gromperekichelcher (potato fritters) and fried fish.
Book hotels early; this is when prices and crowds peak.
Autumn (September to November)
Shoulder season at its best. The Moselle vineyards turn gold during the grape harvest, and forest hikes around Vianden and the Mullerthal are stunning. Expect 10-18C and crisp, clear days.
- Wine festivals along the Moselle in Grevenmacher and Wormeldange through September.
- Fewer tourists, lower prices and excellent value.
Winter (December to February)
Cold but festive, with temperatures around 0-5C. December is the real draw.
- Winterlights (late November to early January): Christmas markets across the capital, plus a Ferris wheel and ice rink.
- January and February are the quietest and cheapest months, ideal if you want museums and the casemates to yourself.
Peak vs shoulder season
- Peak: June to August and December. Best atmosphere, highest prices.
- Shoulder: May, September, October. Great weather, smaller crowds, better deals.
- Low: January to March. Cheapest, quietest, but cold and short days.
