How expensive is Luxembourg?
Luxembourg is one of Europe's wealthiest countries, so prices for dining out and hotels run high. The good news: public transport is completely free, and many of the best sights cost nothing. With a little planning, the Grand Duchy is more affordable than its reputation suggests.
Daily budget at a glance
- Budget traveller: 60-90 EUR per day. Hostel dorm (around 30 EUR), bakery breakfast, supermarket lunch, one casual dinner, free transport.
- Mid-range: 130-200 EUR per day. A 3-star hotel double (100-160 EUR), restaurant meals, a paid museum or two.

Transport is free
Since 2020, all public transport in Luxembourg, buses, trams, and trains in second class, is free for everyone, residents and tourists alike. No ticket needed for everyday travel. The tram links Luxembourg City station to Kirchberg and the airport area, making it easy to skip taxis entirely.
Money and cards
Luxembourg uses the euro (EUR). Cards are accepted nearly everywhere, including contactless and Apple/Google Pay; Visa and Mastercard are universal, while Amex is less reliable in small cafes. Carry a little cash for bakeries, markets, and small bakeries in villages. ATMs (Bancomat) are easy to find; use bank-branded machines and decline the conversion offer (choose to be charged in euros) to avoid poor exchange rates.
