Public transport is free
Since 1 March 2020, Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make all public transport free. Trains, trams and buses cost nothing for everyone, residents and tourists alike. The only exception is first-class train travel, which still requires a ticket. You do not need to validate or buy anything for second class, the tram or any bus.
The tram in Luxembourg City
The modern Luxtram line runs from Luxembourg Airport area connections through Kirchberg (banks and the Philharmonie), past the central station and into the lower city. It is clean, frequent (every few minutes at peak) and the easiest way to cross the capital. The Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg funicular and the panoramic glass Pfaffenthal lift connect the upper and lower town for free too.
Trains and intercity travel
CFL runs the national rail network from Luxembourg Gare (central station). Key lines reach Esch-sur-Alzette, Ettelbruck, Clervaux and the Moselle. International trains connect to:
- Brussels (around 3 hours)
- Trier and Koblenz in Germany
- Metz, Nancy and Paris via TGV (Paris in about 2h15)
Cross-border trains into France and Germany are only free up to the Luxembourg frontier, so buy a through-ticket for the foreign portion.
Buses
Luxembourg City buses (AVL) and the national RGTR network cover towns and villages the train misses. Use the Mobiliteit.lu app or website to plan any door-to-door trip across trains, trams and buses in one search.
Car rental and driving
Major agencies (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis) operate at the airport and station. Roads are excellent and distances tiny, the whole country is under 90 km top to bottom. Fuel is cheaper than in neighbouring countries. Note that central Luxembourg City parking is limited and pricey; Park and Ride lots at the edge let you leave the car and ride the tram in free.
Ride apps and taxis
Uber does not operate in Luxembourg. Use the local Webtaxi app to book a metered cab, or call a stand. Taxis are comfortable but expensive, so for most trips the free tram and bus win easily.
