Getting Around the Maldives: Ferries, Seaplanes and Speedboats

Forget trains and metros

The Maldives is a nation of around 1,200 islands spread across the Indian Ocean, so there are no trains, no metro and no intercity highways. Getting around means getting on the water or in the air. Once you understand the four main options, island-hopping becomes simple.

Public ferries

The state operator MTCC Transport Maldives runs cheap public ferries between Male and the inhabited local islands of nearby atolls. Fares are typically just MVR 25-100 (around 1.5-6 USD), but boats are slow, run only a few times a week, and almost never operate on Fridays. Great for budget travel to islands like Maafushi or Guraidhoo, but always check the schedule a day ahead.

Speedboats

Speedboat transfers are the workhorse of the Maldives. Guesthouses and resorts arrange shared or private speedboats from Male to local islands, usually 25-90 minutes depending on distance. Expect to pay 30-90 USD per person each way. Book through your accommodation rather than at the jetty, and confirm the departure point, as boats leave from several Male harbours.

Seaplanes and domestic flights

For far-flung resorts and atolls, you fly. Trans Maldivian Airways and Manta Air run iconic seaplanes from Velana International Airport (MLE), landing right beside the resort. Seaplanes only fly in daylight and cost roughly 200-600 USD return. For longer distances, domestic flights serve regional airports such as Maamigili, Dharavandhoo and Gan.

Getting around Male and Hulhumale

• Taxis in greater Male cost a flat MVR 30-100; there is no Uber, so use the Avas Ride app or hail one by phone.
• The Hiya electric bus network connects Hulhumale, the airport and Male via the Sinamale Bridge.
• On most local islands and resorts you simply walk, or rent a bicycle.

Car rental and ride apps

Don't plan on renting a car. Only a handful of islands, mainly Male, Hulhumale, Addu and Fuvahmulah, have roads worth driving. On those, bicycles and scooters are the local norm. Ride-hailing exists only in the capital area through Avas Ride.

• Carry small rufiyaa notes for ferries and taxis; USD is widely accepted for transfers.
