How much does Mauritius cost?
Mauritius is more affordable than its luxury-island reputation suggests, especially if you skip the all-inclusive resorts and eat where locals do. Your daily spend depends heavily on where you stay and how you get around.
Prices are in Mauritian rupees (MUR) with rough euro equivalents. Expect roughly 45-50 MUR to 1 EUR.
Daily budgets
- Backpacker: 2,000-3,000 MUR (about 45-65 EUR) per day. Guesthouses, street food, public buses, free beaches.
- Mid-range: 5,000-9,000 MUR (about 110-190 EUR) per day. A small hotel or Airbnb, restaurant meals, the odd taxi and one paid activity.
- Comfort/luxury: 15,000 MUR+ (320 EUR+) per day. Beach resorts, car hire, catamaran trips and spa treatments.

Money and cards
Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, supermarkets (Winners, Super U) and larger restaurants. Carry cash for buses, markets like Port Louis Central Market, and small stalls. ATMs are common in towns; withdraw larger amounts to limit per-transaction fees. Tipping is not mandatory but rounding up is appreciated.
Saving tips
- Take public buses instead of taxis; they cover most of the coast and cost a fraction.
- Eat street food and local dholl puri rather than resort restaurants.
- Shop at Super U or Winners for water, snacks and self-catering.
- Visit in the shoulder season (May-June, September-October) for lower room rates.
- Many of the best beaches (Flic en Flac, Mont Choisy, Belle Mare) are free and public.
