How transport works in Malta

Malta is small but surprisingly tricky to cross because of narrow roads and heavy traffic. There are no trains or metro anywhere on the islands. Your main options are buses, ferries, taxis, ride apps and rental cars.

Buses

The public bus network, run by Malta Public Transport, covers almost every village and tourist spot. Valletta is the central hub, with most routes radiating outward.

• A single ticket costs around 2 euro in summer and 1.50 euro in winter, valid for 2 hours.
• The Tallinja Card (explore card) gives unlimited rides for 7 days, handy if you stay a week.
• Download the official Tallinja app for live times; buses can run late in peak season.
• Night buses connect Paceville, St Julian's and the airport.

Ferries

Ferries are often faster and more scenic than buses.

• The Valletta-Sliema and Valletta-Three Cities ferries cross the Grand Harbour in minutes for about 2.80 euro return.
• The Gozo Channel ferry runs from Cirkewwa to Mgarr every 45 minutes, taking 25 minutes; you pay on the return leg only.
• Small boats shuttle from Gozo to the Blue Lagoon on Comino.

Taxis and ride apps

White official taxis wait at the airport and ranks; always agree a price or ensure the meter runs. Much cheaper are ride apps Bolt and eCabs, which work island-wide with upfront fares. Uber operates through eCabs here.

Car rental and driving

Renting a car gives freedom, especially for Gozo.

• Malta drives on the left, a legacy of British rule.
• Rates start around 20-30 euro a day; book ahead in summer.
• Parking in Valletta and Sliema is scarce; use park-and-ride at Floriana.
• Roads are narrow and signage can be confusing, so a navigation app is essential.

Intercity and island tips

• Allow extra time: a 15 km trip can take an hour in traffic.
• For Gozo, take the bus to Cirkewwa, then the ferry, then a Gozo bus or taxi.
• Hop-on hop-off tourist buses are pricey but cover the main sights in a day.
