Is Mauritius safe?
Mauritius is widely considered one of the safest countries in Africa and the Indian Ocean. Violent crime against tourists is rare, and the island is welcoming and politically stable. The main risks are petty theft, the occasional scam, and natural hazards like strong currents and cyclones rather than personal danger.
General safety tips
- Petty theft is the most common issue. Keep valuables in your hotel safe and don't leave bags unattended on the beach at Flic en Flac, Trou aux Biches, or Grand Baie.
- Avoid walking alone late at night in quiet areas, especially around the capital Port Louis after dark when the centre empties out.
- Drive carefully: roads are narrow, drivers can be aggressive, and stray dogs are common. Roundabouts are everywhere and right of way is often unclear.
- Tap water is generally safe in main towns, but many visitors prefer bottled water.
- Respect the ocean. Always swim inside the reef and heed lifeguard flags, as currents and sharp coral can be dangerous.
Common scams to watch for
- Taxi overcharging. Agree on the fare before you get in, as meters are rarely used. A trip from the airport to Grand Baie should be roughly Rs 1,200 to 1,800.
- "Free" boat trips or guides. Beach touts may offer cheap snorkeling or dolphin tours that turn out to be unlicensed and overpriced. Book through your hotel or a registered operator.
- Spice and craft markets. At the Port Louis Central Market, expect inflated first prices for vanilla, saffron, and souvenirs. Polite haggling is normal.
- Currency confusion. Always count change and use ATMs attached to banks rather than standalone machines.
Areas to take extra care
Most of the island is calm, but stay alert in crowded spots like the Port Louis waterfront and Caudan area, and in nightlife zones of Grand Baie late at night. Roches Noires and some remote beaches have stronger currents, so check local advice before swimming.
