When to go to Lithuania
Lithuania has four sharply defined seasons, and the right month depends on whether you want long sunny days, lively festivals or cheaper prices. Summer (June to August) is the high season, while late spring and early autumn offer the best balance of good weather and smaller crowds.
Summer: peak season (June to August)
Summer is when Lithuania shines. Expect daytime highs of 20 to 25 C, warm Baltic beaches at Palanga and Nida, and very long days. Around the summer solstice in mid-June the sun sets close to 11 pm, leaving only a few hours of twilight.
- Jonines (St John's / Midsummer), 23 to 24 June, is the biggest folk celebration, with bonfires, flower wreaths and fern-flower legends, especially in Kernave.
- Vilnius and Kaunas city festivals fill the streets with concerts and markets.
- The Curonian Spit and Trakai Castle are at their best, but also busiest and priciest.
Shoulder seasons: spring and autumn
Late spring (May) brings blooming parks, mild 15 to 20 C days and far fewer tourists. It is ideal for walking Vilnius Old Town, a UNESCO site, without queues.
Early autumn (September) is a local favourite: golden forests, comfortable temperatures and harvest markets. Prices for hotels and flights drop noticeably after the August peak.
- The Vilnius Capital Days and various wine and food events run through these months.
- Birdwatching on the Curonian Spit peaks during autumn migration.
Winter: quiet and festive (December to February)
Winters are cold, often -5 C or below, with snow and short days. It is low season, so you will find the best deals and a magical, peaceful atmosphere.
- Christmas markets in Vilnius Cathedral Square and Kaunas are among Europe's prettiest, running through December.
- Uzgavenes (Shrovetide) in February features masks, pancakes and the burning of the More effigy.
- Pack serious winter clothing; daylight can be under 8 hours.
Quick recommendation
- Best overall: late May to early June and September.
- Best for beaches and festivals: July.
- Best for budget and snow: January.
