How much does Italy cost per day?
Italy fits almost any budget, but prices vary sharply between a Rome weekend and a quiet Umbrian village. Here are realistic daily figures per person, excluding flights.
- Backpacker: 60-90 EUR (hostel dorm, pizza al taglio, walking, free churches)
- Mid-range: 130-200 EUR (3-star hotel or B&B, trattoria meals, trains, a museum or two)
- Comfort: 280 EUR and up (boutique hotels, taxis, guided tours, fine dining)
Venice, the Amalfi Coast and Cortina cost noticeably more than Naples, Bologna or inland Sicily.
Sample prices
- Espresso at the bar: 1.10-1.50 EUR (sit at a table and it can triple)
- Cappuccino and cornetto breakfast: 3-4 EUR
- Pizza margherita in a pizzeria: 7-9 EUR
- Two-course trattoria dinner with house wine: 25-35 EUR
- Gelato (medium): 3-4 EUR
- 1.5L bottled water at a shop: 0.60-1 EUR
- Colosseum + Forum ticket: around 18 EUR
- Vatican Museums: around 20 EUR
- Rome metro/bus single ride: 1.50 EUR
- High-speed train Rome-Florence (booked early): from 19-29 EUR
Money and cards
Italy is increasingly card-friendly. Visa and Mastercard work almost everywhere, and contactless is standard on buses, metros and most shops. Carry 30-50 EUR in cash for small bars, markets and rural spots. Use bank ATMs (Bancomat) and always choose to be charged in euros, not your home currency, to dodge poor conversion rates. Tipping is modest: rounding up or leaving 1-2 EUR is plenty, though watch for coperto (a 2-3 EUR cover charge) on the bill.
Smart ways to save
- Drink your coffee standing at the bar like locals do
- Eat your main meal at lunch with a fixed-price menu del giorno
- Refill bottles at free public nasoni fountains in Rome
- Buy regional trains in advance and high-speed tickets weeks ahead
- Visit state museums free on the first Sunday of the month
- Choose agriturismo stays or B&Bs over central hotels
