Getting around Italy
Italy is a joy to explore, and you rarely need a car between cities. The rail network is fast, frequent and scenic, while metros and buses cover the big urban centres. Here is how to move like a local.
Trains
Trains are the best way to travel between Italian cities. Two operators compete on the main lines:
- Trenitalia runs Frecciarossa high-speed trains linking Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples in a few hours.
- Italo is a private rival on the same routes, often cheaper if booked early.
Book ahead on the Trenitalia or Italo apps for the best fares. For high-speed trains you get a reserved seat, so validation is automatic. Regional trains (Regionale) are cheaper, have no assigned seat, and must be validated at the green machines on the platform before boarding, or you risk a fine.
Metro and city transport
- Rome has metro lines A, B and C plus trams and buses; a single ticket (around €1.50) lasts 100 minutes.
- Milan has a clean four-line metro; contactless tap-in works on the turnstiles.
- Naples has a metro plus funiculars climbing the hills.
Validate paper tickets when you board. In Milan and Rome you can simply tap a contactless card.
Buses
City buses (ATAC in Rome, ATM in Milan) fill the gaps the metro misses. Buy tickets from tabacchi shops, kiosks or apps before boarding. For intercity routes, FlixBus is cheap and comfortable, reaching towns trains skip.
Car rental
A car is handy for Tuscany, Puglia or the Amalfi Coast, but a headache in cities. Watch for ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) zones in historic centres — cameras issue automatic fines to unauthorised cars. Park outside the centre and walk in.
Ride apps and taxis
- FreeNow and Uber (mostly Uber Black) work in major cities.
- itTaxi and appTaxi book licensed white taxis.
Taxis are metered; always check the meter is running and expect surcharges for luggage and late-night trips.
Intercity tips
- Buy high-speed tickets early; fares rise as seats fill.
- Ferries connect Naples, Sicily, Sardinia and the islands — book in summer.
- Keep your validated regional ticket until you exit.
