The Best Time to Visit Japan: A Season-by-Season Guide

From cherry blossoms in spring to autumn foliage and snowy winters, here's how to pick the perfect month for your trip to Japan.

When to go

Japan rewards travelers in every season, but the right month depends on what you want: blossoms, festivals, hiking, or fewer crowds. The country stretches from subtropical Okinawa to snowy Hokkaido, so timing matters.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is the most popular season thanks to cherry blossoms (sakura). Blooms move north over weeks: Tokyo and Kyoto peak around late March to early April, while Hokkaido waits until late April or May. Days are mild (15-20C) and pleasant for walking.

  • Expect peak crowds and higher hotel prices, especially during Golden Week (late April to early May), when domestic travel surges.
  • Book accommodation in Kyoto and Tokyo two to three months ahead.

Summer (June to August)

Early summer brings the rainy season (tsuyu), roughly mid-June to mid-July, with humid afternoons. July and August are hot (30-35C) and sticky, but this is festival season.

  • Gion Matsuri in Kyoto runs all July, peaking with grand float processions on the 17th and 24th.
  • Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka (July 24-25) ends with fireworks over the river.
  • Hokkaido stays cooler and is ideal for hiking and lavender fields in Furano.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is a favorite of seasoned travelers: comfortable temperatures and spectacular fall foliage (koyo). Colors peak in Kyoto and Nikko from mid-November, later than the blossoms.

  • September can still bring typhoons, so watch forecasts.
  • October and November offer crisp, clear days, perfect for temples and gardens.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is cold in the north but mild in the south. It is the cheapest shoulder period in many cities.

  • Sapporo Snow Festival (early February) features huge ice sculptures.
  • Niseko and Hakuba deliver world-class powder skiing.
  • Soak in an onsen with a snowy view, or escape to warm Okinawa.

Quick picks

  • Best for blossoms: late March to early April
  • Best for foliage: mid to late November
  • Best for skiing: January to February
  • Fewest crowds: January and early February (outside ski resorts)
