What a trip to Jordan really costs
Jordan is more expensive than many travelers expect, mostly because of one big-ticket item: Petra. Plan around it and the rest of the country is very manageable.
The currency is the Jordanian dinar (JOD), pegged at roughly 1 JOD = 1.41 USD, so prices feel high even when they are not. Carry cash for taxis, tips, and small shops.
Daily budgets
- Backpacker: 35-55 JOD/day. Hostel dorm, local food, shared taxis and buses.
- Mid-range: 70-120 JOD/day. A private room or 3-star hotel, mix of taxis and JETT buses, a few sit-down meals.
- Comfort: 150+ JOD/day. Boutique stays, a Wadi Rum camp, private drivers, and guided tours.
These figures exclude flights and the Petra ticket, which you should budget separately.
Sample prices
- Jordan Pass: 70-80 JOD. It covers Petra (1, 2 or 3 days) plus 40+ sites and waives the visa fee if you stay 3+ nights. For most travelers it is the single best money-saver.
- Petra alone (no pass): 50 JOD for one day.
- Wadi Rum jeep tour: 35-60 JOD for a half or full day; overnight camp from 40-70 JOD with dinner.
- Falafel or shawarma: 1-2 JOD. A plate of mansaf in a local restaurant: 6-10 JOD.
- Mezze dinner for two: 20-30 JOD.
- JETT bus Amman to Petra: about 11 JOD one way.
- Local SIM data, coffee, or a museum: 2-5 JOD each.
- Dead Sea public beach entry: 20-25 JOD; resort day passes cost much more.
Money and cards
Visa and Mastercard work in hotels, malls, and bigger restaurants, but cash rules in markets, rural areas, and taxis. ATMs are common in cities; many charge a 3-5 JOD fee, so withdraw larger amounts less often. Tell your bank you are traveling, and keep small notes for tips (a dinar or two is normal).
How to save
- Buy the Jordan Pass before you arrive to skip the visa fee.
- Travel by JETT bus or shared service taxis instead of private hires.
- Eat where locals do: falafel, hummus, and shawarma are cheap and excellent.
- Visit the Dead Sea via a public beach rather than a resort.
- Negotiate Wadi Rum and taxi prices politely before you set off.
