Kazakhstan Travel Budget: Daily Costs and Money-Saving Tips

How much does a trip to Kazakhstan really cost? Real daily budgets, sample prices in tenge, card tips and ways to save in Almaty, Astana and beyond.

What a day in Kazakhstan really costs

Kazakhstan is one of Central Asia's better-value destinations, though the gap between budget and comfort travel is wide. Prices are in Kazakhstani tenge (KZT), and roughly 480-510 KZT equals 1 USD at the time of writing.

Here are realistic daily budgets per person:

  • Backpacker: 12,000-20,000 KZT (about 25-40 USD) using hostels, marshrutkas and self-catering
  • Mid-range: 30,000-55,000 KZT (60-110 USD) with a private room, restaurants and the odd taxi
  • Comfort: 80,000 KZT and up (160 USD+) with hotels, guides and domestic flights

Sample prices

  • Hostel dorm bed: 4,000-7,000 KZT
  • Mid-range double room in Almaty: 18,000-35,000 KZT
  • Plov or lagman at a local cafe: 1,500-2,500 KZT
  • Restaurant main in the city centre: 3,500-6,000 KZT
  • Coffee: 1,200-1,800 KZT
  • Almaty metro ride: 100 KZT
  • City bus or marshrutka: 100-150 KZT
  • 1.5L bottled water: 250 KZT
  • Domestic flight Almaty-Astana: 25,000-45,000 KZT
  • Shymbulak ski lift day pass: from 13,000 KZT

Money and cards

Kazakhstan is surprisingly cashless. Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere, even in small cafes and at market stalls via the Kaspi QR app that locals love. Contactless works on the Almaty metro and buses. Still, carry some cash for marshrutkas in smaller towns, bazaars like Almaty's Green Bazaar, and rural areas.

Withdraw tenge from ATMs (Halyk Bank and Kaspi are widespread) rather than changing money at the airport, where rates are poor. Exchange offices in the city give the best rates for USD and EUR cash.

How to save money

  • Eat at stolovayas (canteens) where a full meal runs 1,500-2,500 KZT
  • Use the metro and marshrutkas instead of taxis; the inDrive app is far cheaper than hailing
  • Buy a SIM or eSIM for cheap data instead of roaming
  • Travel between cities by train - a sleeper from Almaty to Astana costs from 8,000 KZT
  • Visit free sights: Kok-Tobe views, Panfilov Park, the Charyn Canyon on a shared tour
  • Shop for fruit, bread and kurt at bazaars rather than supermarkets

A week of independent mid-range travel, excluding flights into the country, typically lands around 250,000-380,000 KZT (500-760 USD).
