Kenya's two dry and two wet seasons
Kenya sits on the equator, so it has dry and wet seasons rather than summer and winter. Temperatures stay fairly warm year-round, but rainfall and wildlife make a huge difference to your trip.
- Long dry season (June to October): the prime safari window, cooler and largely rain-free.
- Short rains (November to December): brief afternoon showers, green landscapes, fewer crowds.
- Hot dry spell (January to February): sunny, excellent for wildlife and the coast.
- Long rains (March to May): the wettest stretch and the true low season.
Peak season: June to October
This is the best time for a classic safari. Grass is short, animals gather at waterholes, and the famous Great Migration reaches the Masai Mara, usually between July and October. Dramatic Mara River crossings are most likely in August and September.
Expect higher prices and busy camps. Book Mara lodges months ahead, and bring a fleece for chilly dawn game drives, when temperatures can drop to around 10C.
Shoulder and low season: November to May
The short rains (November to December) bring lush scenery and lower rates, with showers usually clearing by afternoon. January and February are hot, dry and superb for both safari and the Indian Ocean coast around Diani, Watamu and Lamu.
The long rains of March to May offer the lowest prices but some lodges close and dirt roads turn to mud. It is still a fine time for birdwatching, with migratory species present.
Festivals and events by month
- February to March: Maralal Camel Derby is in August, but coastal carnivals and cultural events liven up the dry months.
- June: Madaraka Day (1 June) celebrates self-rule.
- August: Maralal Camel Derby, a quirky desert race in Samburu country.
- October: Mashujaa (Heroes) Day on 20 October.
- November: Lamu Cultural Festival showcases Swahili dhow races, poetry and music.
- December: Jamhuri Day (12 December) marks independence, with nationwide festivities.
Quick recommendation
For the Migration and reliable game viewing, aim for July to October. For warm beaches and value, choose January to February. For green landscapes and the lowest prices, the short rains in November are a smart pick.
