Getting Around Jordan: A Complete Transport Guide

From Amman's buses and the Hejaz Railway to JETT coaches, car rental and ride apps, here's how to travel Jordan smoothly and affordably.

Getting around Jordan

Jordan is compact and easy to explore, but it has no metro and only a token rail network, so most travel happens by road. With a little planning you can reach Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and Aqaba without stress.

Trains

Do not plan your trip around trains. The historic Hejaz Railway (built in the Ottoman era for pilgrims to Medina) survives mainly as a tourist curiosity. You can sometimes ride a short heritage steam train near Amman or Wadi Rum by private booking, but there is no scheduled intercity passenger service. Treat trains as an experience, not transport.

Metro and city buses

There is no metro in Jordan. In Amman, the Amman Bus network and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines cover many main corridors cheaply, with fares around 0.35-0.65 JOD. Routes can be confusing for first-timers, so most visitors mix buses with taxis. Cities like Irbid and Aqaba have local minibuses (servees) that leave when full.

Intercity buses

  • JETT is the main comfortable coach operator, running Amman to Petra, Aqaba, the King Hussein Bridge and Amman airport. Book ahead online for popular routes.
  • Minibuses connect almost every town from hubs like Amman's South (Wihdat) and North (Tabarbour) stations. They are cheap but leave only when full and rarely run after dark.

Car rental

Renting a car is the best way to see Jordan at your own pace. International chains and local firms operate at Queen Alia Airport and in Amman. Roads to Petra, the Dead Sea and along the Desert Highway are good; the King's Highway is scenic but slow and winding. Drive on the right, carry your passport and license, and fuel up before remote stretches.

Ride-hailing apps

  • Uber and Careem both work well in Amman and give fixed, transparent prices, which avoids haggling.
  • Local app Jeeny is also popular.
  • Regular yellow taxis are metered by law, but always ask the driver to start the meter (addad).

Intercity travel tips

  • Carry small JOD notes; minibus drivers rarely have change.
  • Travel between cities during daylight, as rural services thin out by evening.
  • For Petra and Wadi Rum, combine a JETT coach with a local taxi or 4x4 tour.
  • Friday mornings are quiet, so check return times before you set off.
