How much does Japan cost per day?

Japan is more affordable than many travelers expect. Outside of flights, a realistic daily budget looks like this:

For a single Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka loop, individual Shinkansen tickets (about 14,000 yen one way) plus an IC card like Suica or ICOCA for city travel are often cheaper. Tap your IC card on buses, trains, and even vending machines.

Money and cards

Japan still loves cash. Carry 10,000-20,000 yen for small shops, temples, and rural areas. Visa and Mastercard work at hotels, chains, and department stores. Withdraw yen at 7-Eleven or Japan Post ATMs, which reliably accept foreign cards. Tipping is not expected anywhere.
