How to Choose a Travel eSIM: What to Compare

Eight things worth comparing before you buy a travel eSIM, from the local networks behind a plan and when validity starts, to top-ups, support, refunds and payment.

Search for the best travel eSIM and you will find endless lists, each with a different winner. The honest answer is that the right eSIM depends on your trip: where you are going, how long for, how you use your phone and how much hassle you are willing to tolerate if something goes wrong.

Rather than another ranking, here is a checklist of what actually matters, in roughly the order it affects your trip. Run any eSIM through these eight questions and the right choice usually becomes obvious.

1. Coverage: the destination and the networks behind it

Start with the obvious: is your destination covered? Then look one level deeper. A travel eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so check which networks a plan uses in each country. A good provider lists them for every destination.

Why it matters: coverage in rural areas, islands and mountains can differ between networks. If you are heading off the beaten track, a plan that can use more than one local network gives you more options.

If your trip crosses borders, check whether a regional plan covers every country on your route, or whether a global plan suits a longer journey better. Juggling several single-country eSIMs is possible, but one plan is simpler.

2. 4G or 5G, and whether it matters to you

Most travel tasks, such as maps, messaging, browsing, social media and calls over apps, run comfortably on 4G/LTE. 5G is a bonus where it exists, but only if three things line up: the local network offers it, the plan includes it, and your phone supports it.

So check how a plan labels each destination's networks rather than assuming "5G" applies everywhere. And remember 5G can use more battery, so many people are happy on 4G anyway.

3. Data amount versus number of days

Every travel plan combines a data allowance with a validity period. Match both to your trip:

  • Days: cover the whole stay, including travel days at each end.
  • Data: estimate from your habits. A useful rule of thumb is about 1 GB a week for light use such as maps and messaging, 3–5 GB a week for regular use with social media and browsing, and 10 GB or more for video, video calls and work.

Heavy users heading to a single destination may want an unlimited-style plan where one is offered. Everyone else is usually better off with a realistic data amount and the option to top up.

4. When the validity clock starts

This is the detail many people miss. Some plans start counting days from the moment you buy or install them. Others start only when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination.

The second approach is far more forgiving: you can buy and install the eSIM days or weeks ahead, test that the installation worked at home, and lose nothing if your trip is delayed. Always check this before buying early.

5. Top-ups without reinstalling

Plans run out, trips get extended, and estimates are just estimates. Find out whether you can add data to the same eSIM or whether you would need to buy and install a new one. Topping up the same eSIM means no new QR code, no fresh installation in a hotel lobby and no juggling of lines in your settings.

6. Delivery, installation and what kind of line you get

Check how and when you receive the eSIM. Delivery by email straight after payment is the most convenient, especially if you can also find the QR code later in an account or app. Clear installation instructions for both iPhone and Android, including a manual option for when you cannot scan the code, save a lot of frustration.

Also check whether the eSIM is data-only or comes with a phone number. Many travel eSIMs are data-only: your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, while you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime. For most travellers that is exactly what they want, because WhatsApp and bank texts stay on their usual number.

7. Support and refund terms

You will only need support if something goes wrong, which is usually when you are tired, at an airport and without data. Before you buy, check:

  • How you contact support and how quickly they reply.
  • The refund policy. eSIMs are delivered digitally, so refunds are usually limited. Read what counts as an exception, such as a technical fault.

Clear, honest terms are a better sign than generous-sounding promises.

8. Payment and currency

Check which payment methods are accepted and which currency you will be charged in. If the price is in a different currency from your card, your card provider handles the conversion, possibly with a fee, so check your card's terms.

How HelloSIM answers this checklist

Since you are on our blog, here is how HelloSIM fits the eight questions:

  • Coverage: 190+ destinations with country plans, regional plans and a Global plan, with the local networks listed for each destination.
  • Network type: 4G/LTE everywhere we sell; 5G where the networks listed for that destination are marked 5G and your phone supports it.
  • Validity: starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not at purchase.
  • Top-ups: add data to the same eSIM from the Check / Top up page, your account or the HelloSIM app, with no reinstalling.
  • Delivery: the QR code is emailed straight away after payment, and it is also in your account and the app. You can check out as a guest with nothing more than an email.
  • Line type: data-only, so your number and WhatsApp stay as they are.
  • Support: email [email protected], answered within 24 hours, or the live chat in the HelloSIM app.
  • Refunds: sales are final once the eSIM is delivered, except for a verified technical fault that support cannot fix and on which no data was used.
  • Payment: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay or your HelloSIM wallet balance. Prices are in euros, with USD, GBP and CHF shown for reference.

Before any purchase, also confirm that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important thing to check when choosing a travel eSIM?
Start with coverage: make sure your destination is included and see which local networks the plan uses there. Then check when validity starts and whether you can top up.
Do I need a 5G travel eSIM?
Not necessarily. 4G/LTE handles maps, messaging, browsing and app calls comfortably, and 5G only works where the network, the plan and your phone all support it.
Should I choose a regional or a single-country eSIM?
If you are visiting one country, a country plan is usually enough. If your route crosses several countries, a regional or global plan keeps everything on one eSIM.
Why does it matter when validity starts?
If validity starts on first connection at your destination, you can buy and install early without losing days. Plans that start at purchase or installation give you less flexibility.
Can I get a phone number with a HelloSIM eSIM?
No. HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps like WhatsApp, while your own SIM keeps your number for calls and texts.
Can I get a refund if I change my plans?
With HelloSIM, sales are final once the eSIM is delivered. The only exception is a verified technical fault that support is unable to fix, provided no data has been used.
