Boarding passes, hotel confirmations, ride apps, translation tools and the map that gets you from the station to your door: almost everything a modern trip depends on assumes you have internet the moment you land. The question is how you get it. This guide compares the usual ways of staying online abroad, explains what an internet eSIM is and walks through setting one up before you leave and switching it on when you arrive.
Your options for internet abroad
Travellers generally choose from five routes, often mixing two of them.
- Roaming on your home plan. Easy, because nothing changes. But your home operator may bill roaming data by the day or by the megabyte, and depending on your tariff and destination it can cost a good deal more than you expect. Check your current tariff before relying on it.
- A local SIM card bought on arrival. Can work well, but means finding a shop or kiosk, possibly showing ID depending on the country, and removing your own SIM if your phone has only one slot.
- Public Wi-Fi. Hotels, cafés and airports often have it, but it is patchy, sometimes slow, and not something you can rely on in the street or on a train.
- A portable Wi-Fi router. One more device to rent, charge, carry and often return.
- An internet eSIM. A data plan you download to your phone before you travel, which connects to local networks when you land.
Each has its place, but for most people with a recent, unlocked phone, the last option removes the most hassle.
What an internet eSIM is
An internet eSIM is a mobile data plan delivered as a digital SIM profile rather than a plastic card. You install it on your phone, and it sits alongside your existing SIM as a second line dedicated to data.
HelloSIM eSIMs work this way. They are data-only: there is no local phone number and no regular calls or SMS. Everything that runs over the internet works normally, including maps, email, browsing, streaming and calls or messages through apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or Viber. Your regular SIM isn't touched, so your usual number is still there for texts and calls.
Plans are available for 190+ destinations: individual countries, regions such as Europe or Asia Pacific, and a Global plan for trips spanning continents. You choose by how much data you need and for how many days.

Before you fly: set it up at home
The single best piece of advice is to do the setup at home, on Wi-Fi, a few days before departure. Installing needs an internet connection, and your home sofa is a calmer place to do it than an arrivals hall.
- 1Check your phone. Two boxes to tick: eSIM support and no carrier lock. An "Add eSIM" entry in Settings is the giveaway for the first. If your iPhone was bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao, double-check, as many models from there take two physical SIMs and no eSIM.
- 2Buy your plan. Pick the destination or region, then the data and days. No account is needed: a guest checkout only asks for your email.
- 3Find your QR code. It arrives in your inbox straight away after payment, with a copy saved in your HelloSIM account and app.
- 4Install it. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular) → Add eSIM, then scan the code. On Android the route is usually Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, or Connections → SIM manager on Samsung, then Add eSIM; other brands word it slightly differently. If scanning isn't possible, enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email by hand.
- 5Label the line. Give the new line an obvious name, such as "Travel", so it's easy to spot in Settings later.
Installing early wastes nothing: the plan's days don't begin until the eSIM picks up a network at your destination.
Until departure day, keep the new line switched off and your home line set for mobile data, so the phone doesn't try to connect on the travel line before you go.
On arrival: getting connected
Once the plane is on the ground and you can switch off flight mode, go through these steps:
- 1Switch the HelloSIM line on in your SIM settings.
- 2Set it as the line for mobile data.
- 3Turn on Data Roaming for the HelloSIM line. It can't reach local networks without it, and since the data is already paid for, roaming adds nothing to the cost.
- 4Switch Data Roaming off on your home line, which keeps your regular operator's roaming data out of the picture.
- 5Give the phone a moment to find a network. Once you see signal bars and a 4G or 5G indicator on the travel line, you are online.
Your home SIM can stay on for calls and texts if you want to remain reachable on your usual number, but check what your home carrier charges for incoming calls abroad before answering.
Making your data go further
A few small habits stretch an internet eSIM a long way:
- Download offline maps for the cities you'll visit before you leave home.
- Set app updates and photo backups to happen only over Wi-Fi.
- Lower video quality in streaming apps when you are on mobile data.
- Use Wi-Fi where it is reliable, such as at your accommodation, and keep the eSIM for when you are out and about.
Running low? Extra data can go straight onto the eSIM you already installed, via the Check / Top up page, your account or the app.
If you're not connected
Most connection problems come down to settings. Check that the HelloSIM line is switched on, chosen for mobile data and has Data Roaming enabled. Toggling flight mode on and off, or restarting the phone, often prompts it to register with a local network.
If you are still offline, message the HelloSIM team: email [email protected] (replies within 24 hours) or open the live chat in the HelloSIM app. If you have no connection at all, the nearest Wi-Fi will get the message through.
