How to Top Up an eSIM Without Reinstalling It

Running low on data abroad? How to add data to the eSIM already on your phone, where to do it, and how to track usage so you top up in time.

Halfway through a trip, plenty of travellers discover they've used more data than they expected. Rain pushed them indoors and onto streaming, the maps worked harder than planned, or work followed them on holiday. Whatever the reason, the fix is simple: you add data to the eSIM you already have. No new QR code, no fresh installation, no second line to configure.

What a top-up actually does

A top-up adds a new data package to an existing eSIM. The eSIM profile on your phone stays exactly as it is, with the same label, the same line settings and the same data roaming switch, and simply gets more data to use.

That's different from buying a brand-new eSIM. A new eSIM means scanning another QR code, adding another travel line to your phone and choosing which one handles data. You'd normally only do that when you're heading to a destination your current plan doesn't cover.

Signs it's time to top up

Don't wait for the data to stop mid-journey. Top up when:

  • A long travel day is coming, with maps, ride-hailing and train tickets all on your phone.
  • Your remaining data won't last the days left at your current pace.
  • Your use has shifted towards video calls or watching video on the go. As a rough guide, heavy use like that runs to 10 GB a week or more, against about 1 GB a week for light maps-and-messaging use.
  • You're heading somewhere with little Wi-Fi, such as a road trip or a rural stay.

Three places to top up

HelloSIM gives you three ways to add data. They all lead to the same result: more data on the same eSIM.

The Check / Top up page

The Check / Top up page on the HelloSIM website shows how much data is left and lets you add more. It's handy if you bought as a guest without creating an account; you'll need the details from your order email to find your eSIM.

Your HelloSIM account

If you bought while signed in, your eSIMs are listed in your account on the website. Pick the eSIM you're using on this trip and add a package from there.

The HelloSIM app

The HelloSIM iPhone app shows the same eSIMs as your account, so you can top up in a few taps while you're out and about.

Topping up, step by step

  1. 1Get online. If your eSIM still has some data, use it; if it has run out, connect to Wi-Fi at your accommodation or a café.
  2. 2Open the Check / Top up page, your account or the app.
  3. 3Select the eSIM that's installed on your phone for this trip.
  4. 4Choose a package, checking both the data amount and the number of days.
  5. 5Pay with the same methods as at checkout: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay or your HelloSIM wallet balance. Prices are in euros, and your bank converts them if your card uses another currency.
  6. 6Carry on using the same eSIM. There's nothing to scan and nothing to reinstall.

Keeping an eye on usage

Your phone keeps its own count of mobile data, which helps you spot what's eating it.

  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile/Cellular lists the data used by each app. Reset the statistics at the start of the trip so you only see this trip's usage.
  • Android: look for data usage under Settings → Network & internet or Connections. Wording varies by brand, and you can usually filter by SIM.

Compare your phone's figure with the remaining balance on the Check / Top up page or in the app. If one app stands out, the culprit is often a cloud backup, an automatic update or video autoplay. Switch those to Wi-Fi only and your data stretches noticeably further.

Top up, or buy a new eSIM?

A top-up is the right move while you stay within your current plan's coverage: the same country for a country plan, or the countries on the list of a regional or Global plan. Buy a new eSIM when your next stop isn't covered, for example a side trip from your country plan into a neighbouring country. In that case, install the new eSIM over Wi-Fi before you go; its days only begin once it connects at its destination.

A simple routine for longer trips

On trips that run beyond a week or two, a light routine saves you from running dry at the wrong moment:

  • On arrival, note how much data your plan includes and how many days it runs.
  • Every few days, check the balance on the Check / Top up page or in the app, ideally in the evening on hotel Wi-Fi.
  • Before a big travel day or a run of video calls, top up the night before rather than at the station or the airport.
  • If you find yourself topping up on every trip, start with a larger plan next time. The rules of thumb are a good starting point: about 1 GB a week for light use, 3–5 GB for regular use and 10 GB or more for heavy use.

What happens if the data runs out first

HelloSIM plans are prepaid, so running out doesn't create a bill: data on that line simply stops until you add more. The thing to avoid is reaching for your home line's mobile data out of habit. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM, because your own carrier may charge for roaming data; check your current tariff if you're unsure. Find Wi-Fi, top up, and your eSIM carries on where it left off.

If a top-up doesn't seem to have arrived, contact support at [email protected] or through the live chat in the HelloSIM app.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to scan a new QR code after topping up?
No. A top-up adds data to the eSIM that's already on your phone, so there's nothing to scan or reinstall.
Can I top up if I bought my eSIM as a guest?
Yes. Use the Check / Top up page on the HelloSIM website with the details from your order email.
How do I top up if my data has already run out?
Connect to Wi-Fi at your hotel, a café or the airport, then top up from the Check / Top up page, your account or the app.
Will I be charged automatically when my data runs low?
No. HelloSIM plans are prepaid, so you only pay for a top-up when you choose to buy one.
Does a top-up change my eSIM settings?
No. The label, the data line choice and the data roaming setting all stay exactly as you set them.
Which payment methods can I use for a top-up?
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay or your HelloSIM wallet balance. Prices are shown in euros.
