Why Hong Kong is easy to navigate
Hong Kong has one of the world's best public transport networks. A single Octopus card taps you onto trains, buses, trams, ferries and minibuses, and even pays at convenience stores. Buy one at any MTR station for HK$150 (with HK$50 deposit) or use Octopus on your phone.
The MTR (metro and trains)
The MTR is fast, clean and air-conditioned, covering Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Trains run roughly 6am to 1am. A typical city fare is HK$5-15. The Airport Express links HKG airport to Central in 24 minutes (HK$115), with free shuttle buses to major hotels.

Buses, trams and minibuses
Double-decker buses reach areas the MTR misses, including beaches and the Peak. The historic "ding ding" tram rattles across Hong Kong Island for a flat HK$3 - a sightseeing bargain. Green minibuses follow fixed routes; red minibuses are faster but trickier without Cantonese.
Ferries
The Star Ferry between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui costs around HK$5 and offers the best harbour view in the city. Ferries also serve outlying islands like Lamma, Cheung Chau and Lantau from Central piers.
Taxis and ride apps
Taxis are colour-coded: red (urban), green (New Territories) and blue (Lantau). Urban taxis start around HK$29. Most accept Octopus and cash; carry small notes. Uber operates here, and the local app HKTaxi hails street cabs reliably.
Car rental and intercity travel
Most visitors skip renting a car - parking is scarce, expensive and driving is on the left. For day trips, public transport is faster. To reach Macau, take the TurboJet ferry (about 1 hour) or a bus across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. High-speed rail from West Kowloon Station reaches Guangzhou in 48 minutes and Shenzhen in 14 - bring your passport for mainland China crossings.
