Iceland Travel Budget: Real Daily Costs and How to Save

What a trip to Iceland really costs in 2026 — daily budgets, sample prices for food, fuel and tours, plus practical ways to spend less.

How expensive is Iceland, really?

Iceland is one of the priciest countries in Europe, but a clear budget keeps surprises away. Almost everything is paid by card, the currency is the Icelandic krona (ISK), and prices below are realistic 2026 figures around Reykjavik and the Ring Road.

Daily budgets per person

  • Budget (hostel, cooking, bus or shared car): roughly 18,000-25,000 ISK / 120-170 EUR per day
  • Mid-range (guesthouse, some restaurants, rental car): 35,000-55,000 ISK / 240-380 EUR per day
  • Comfort (hotel, tours, dining out): 70,000 ISK / 480 EUR and up

A couple sharing a car and room saves the most, since accommodation and the rental are the heaviest costs.

Sample prices

  • Coffee: 600-750 ISK
  • Bakery pastry (snudur): 500-700 ISK
  • Hot dog at Baejarins Beztu, Reykjavik: about 700 ISK
  • Restaurant main course: 3,500-5,500 ISK
  • Pint of beer: 1,400-1,800 ISK
  • Supermarket sandwich + drink: around 1,500 ISK
  • Bottle of water (refill the tap instead): 350 ISK
  • Litre of petrol: about 320 ISK
  • Hostel dorm bed: 7,000-9,000 ISK
  • Small rental car per day: 8,000-14,000 ISK
  • Blue Lagoon entry: from 9,990 ISK

Money and cards

Iceland is nearly cashless. Visa and Mastercard work everywhere, including remote fuel pumps, where you may need a card PIN. Carry one as backup and tell your bank you are travelling. Tipping is not expected. Tap water is excellent and free, so skip bottled water entirely.

Ways to save

  • Shop at Bonus or Kronan (the low-cost supermarkets) and self-cater; Bonus has a pink piggy logo.
  • Drink the tap water — it is glacier-fresh.
  • Skip the Blue Lagoon for cheaper local pools like Reykjavik's Laugardalslaug (about 1,330 ISK) or the Secret Lagoon.
  • Buy alcohol at duty-free on arrival; bars and Vinbudin shops are expensive.
  • Drive the Ring Road yourself instead of booking many day tours.
  • Visit nature for free — waterfalls, beaches and most hot springs cost nothing.
  • Travel in shoulder season (May, September) for lower car and room rates.
