When to visit Hungary

Hungary has a continental climate: warm summers, cold winters and two glorious shoulder seasons. The best time to visit is late April to June and September to mid-October, when the weather is mild, Budapest is lively and crowds are thinner than in midsummer.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is fresh and green, with temperatures climbing from around 10C to 22C by May. Parks like Margaret Island bloom, and terraces reopen. Late April and May are ideal for sightseeing without the summer heat. Pack a light jacket for cool evenings.

Summer (June to August)

This is peak season. Days are hot, often 28 to 33C, and Budapest fills with visitors. Lake Balaton, the country's summer playground, hits its busiest stretch. Expect higher hotel prices and book ahead.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is arguably the sweet spot. September stays warm (around 22 to 25C) but calmer, and the wine regions of Eger and Tokaj burst into harvest. Prices ease and light turns golden over the Buda Hills.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is cold, often below freezing, but atmospheric. The famous Christmas markets at Vorosmarty Square and St Stephen's Basilica are a highlight, and the thermal baths at Szechenyi feel magical in the steam and snow.

• New Year celebrations along the Danube.
