Common scams to watch for

• Inflated bar bills and "consummation" venues. Avoid strip clubs or bars where a friendly local invites you in. Some near Vaci utca and the nightlife district have hit tourists with bills of hundreds of euros. Check prices before ordering.
• Taxi overcharging. Only use marked taxis or apps like Bolt and Fotaxi. Legitimate Budapest taxis are yellow with a license number; the official rate is around 1,100 HUF base plus roughly 440 HUF per km. Never take an unmarked car at the airport.
• Currency tricks. Hungary uses the forint (HUF), not the euro. Avoid street money changers and machines offering "no commission" with terrible rates. Always decline "dynamic currency conversion" and pay in forint.
