When to go
Hong Kong has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. The most comfortable months are late October to early December, when the air turns dry, skies clear and temperatures sit around 20-26 degrees Celsius. This is peak quality for hiking Dragon's Back, riding the Star Ferry and enjoying Victoria Peak without haze.
Autumn (October-December): the best season
This is the clear winner. Low humidity, sunny days and pleasant evenings make it ideal for everything outdoors. It is also peak tourist season, so book hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui and Central early. The Wine & Dine Festival lights up the harbourfront in late October.
Winter (January-February): cool and dry
Expect 14-20 degrees and crisp air. It can feel chilly at night, especially on The Peak. Chinese New Year (late January or February) brings flower markets, fireworks over Victoria Harbour and a famous parade, though many small shops close for several days.
Spring (March-May): mild but misty
Temperatures climb to 18-27 degrees, but humidity returns and fog often blankets the hills. Sea mist can hide the skyline. The lively Cheung Chau Bun Festival in late April or May is a highlight, with its towering bun mountains and floating-children parade.
Summer (June-September): hot, wet and the low season
Hot, sticky days of 28-33 degrees with heavy afternoon downpours and high typhoon risk. When a T8 signal is hoisted, transport and attractions shut down. The upside: this is the cheapest time to fly and stay, and indoor escapes like museums and malls are plentiful. The Dragon Boat Festival races in June are a thrilling watch.
