Global eSIM: One Plan for Multi-Country Trips

How a global eSIM works, which trips it suits, what happens to your data on layovers, and when a regional or country plan is the better fit.

Some itineraries refuse to fit inside one region. A sabbatical that starts in Europe, swings through the Gulf and finishes in South-East Asia. A sales tour covering three continents in two weeks. A gap year with a rough direction and no fixed return date. On trips like these, buying a separate eSIM for every stop quickly turns into admin you don't need.

A global eSIM removes that admin: one plan, one installation and one data allowance that travels across borders with you.

What a global eSIM actually is

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile that you download to your phone instead of inserting a plastic card. A global eSIM is a profile that connects to partner networks in a long list of countries across several continents, rather than in one country or one region.

When you land somewhere on the list, your phone registers on one of the networks listed for that destination, much as it would with a local SIM. When you fly on, it does the same again in the next country. You don't scan anything new, and there's nothing to swap.

HelloSIM's Global plan is data-only. It gives you mobile internet rather than a local phone number. Calls and messages go through apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or Viber, and your usual SIM stays in the phone, so your own number keeps working for calls and texts.

What the Global plan covers

The most important step is to open the Global plan page and compare its country list with your route. That list belongs to the Global plan specifically, so confirm that every country where you'll spend time is on it. If one stop is missing, pair the Global plan with a country plan for that destination.

The plan page also shows which networks the eSIM uses in each country. You'll have 4G/LTE throughout; 5G is available only where the listed networks are marked 5G and your phone supports it.

Like other HelloSIM plans, the Global plan comes in options that differ by data amount and number of days, so you can pick the combination that matches both the length and the intensity of your trip.

Trips where a global plan shines

  • Round-the-world journeys that cross several regions in one go
  • Long trips with an open route, when you don't yet know where you'll be next month
  • Frequent flyers whose schedules change at short notice
  • Multi-region business trips, with meetings on different continents in the same week
  • Long stopovers, such as two nights in a hub city on the way somewhere else

The appeal is the same in every case: your phone is ready wherever you land, and you don't lose the first hour of each arrival to sorting out connectivity.

Layovers and stopovers: what happens to your data

The days on a HelloSIM plan start when the eSIM first connects to a network at a destination, not when you buy it. With a global plan, that detail matters, because a layover can count as a destination.

If your HelloSIM line is switched on with data roaming enabled when you land for a connection in a covered country, it will connect and the clock starts there. For most travellers that's exactly right: messages work while you wait for the next flight. If you'd rather save every day for later, leave the HelloSIM line switched off during the layover, use the airport Wi-Fi and turn the line on at your first real stop.

Whichever you choose, keep data roaming switched off on your home line for the whole journey, so your own carrier doesn't add roaming charges.

When a regional or country plan fits better

A global plan is about range. If your trip stays within one part of the world, a plan built for that area is usually the closer match:

  • A fortnight across several European countries suits the Europe plan.
  • A loop through several countries in Asia suits the Asia Pacific plan, provided every stop is on its list.
  • A holiday in a single country is best served by a plan for that country.

Look at the data and day options for your exact route, and choose the narrowest plan that still covers every stop.

Sizing data for a long journey

Long trips make data harder to budget, because a week of beach reading uses far less than a week of working on the road. Start from weekly rules of thumb:

  • Light use (maps, messaging, the odd search): about 1 GB a week
  • Regular use (social media, browsing, sharing photos): around 3–5 GB a week
  • Heavy use (video, video calls, work): 10 GB a week or more

Multiply by the number of weeks you'll rely on mobile data, then allow for the time you'll spend on decent Wi-Fi in hostels, hotels or rented flats. On a long journey it often makes more sense to start with a sensible amount and top up the same eSIM along the way, from the Check / Top up page, your account or the app, than to guess high on day one.

Setting up before you leave

  1. 1Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked; an "Add eSIM" option in Settings is a good sign.
  2. 2Buy the plan on the website or in the HelloSIM app. Guest checkout needs only an email address.
  3. 3The QR code arrives by email straight away and is also saved in your HelloSIM account and the app.
  4. 4Install it at home over Wi-Fi. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM. On Android: Network & internet or Connections, then SIMs or SIM manager.
  5. 5Give the new line an obvious label, such as "Global".
  6. 6On arrival, switch the line on, make it your mobile data line and enable data roaming for it. That costs nothing extra, because the data is prepaid.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Global plan include every destination HelloSIM sells?
The Global plan has its own country list, shown on its plan page. Check every stop against it, and add a country plan for any destination that isn't listed.
When does a global eSIM start counting days?
When it first connects to a network at a destination. A layover in a covered country counts, so keep the line switched off until you want the days to start.
Do I need to change settings when I cross a border?
Usually not, because the phone registers on one of the listed networks by itself. If data doesn't return after landing, toggle aeroplane mode or choose a listed network manually in the eSIM line's settings.
Will I get a local phone number in each country?
No. The Global plan is data-only, so you call and message through apps, while your usual SIM keeps your own number for calls and texts.
Can I top up a global eSIM while I'm travelling?
Yes. Add more data to the same eSIM from the Check / Top up page, your HelloSIM account or the app, with no reinstall needed.
Can two people share one global eSIM?
No. Each eSIM is installed on one phone, so every traveller needs their own plan.
