Gibraltar is small enough to walk across in an afternoon, yet it squeezes in a nature reserve, caves, wartime tunnels and views across the Strait to Africa. You can fly straight into Gibraltar International Airport, right beside the land border, but many visitors land at Málaga Airport and cross on foot from La Línea de la Concepción in Spain, and plenty more arrive on a cruise ship. A HelloSIM eSIM lets you sort out your data before any of that.
Why use an eSIM in Gibraltar
- Set it up at home and you are online as soon as you cross the border or step off the ship.
- A plan made for Gibraltar's own network, which matters when Spanish masts stand just across the border.
- Maps for the Upper Rock, Main Street and the walk out to Europa Point.
- Your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps your usual number.
- Prepaid data, so no roaming bill when you get home.
Gibraltar is not included in the Europe regional plan, and many visitors pair it with a holiday on the Costa del Sol. Knowing which plan covers which side of the border saves a lot of frustration, and the tips below show you how to handle it.

Networks and coverage
Your HelloSIM eSIM connects to Gibtelecom, with 5G where available on compatible phones and 4G/LTE elsewhere. Coverage is strong in the town centre, along Main Street and around Casemates Square, in the marinas and residential districts, and at the cruise terminal.
The Rock itself is the main obstacle. Signal can weaken on the cliffs and steep paths of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, and it drops inside St Michael's Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels. Near the border, the airport and along the bay, your phone may pick up Spanish networks instead, because Spain begins just across the runway.
How to get connected
- 1Check your inbox after payment: the QR code is sent straight away and is also stored in your HelloSIM account and app.
- 2Install it at home on Wi-Fi. iPhone: Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM. Android: Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
- 3In Gibraltar, turn on the HelloSIM line, make it your mobile data line and enable Data Roaming for it. Switch data roaming off on your home SIM.
- 4The plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in Gibraltar. You can add more data to the same eSIM at any time without reinstalling it.
How much data do you need
- Light (roughly 1 GB a week): maps, messaging and checking the cable car before you queue.
- Medium (3–5 GB a week): social media, browsing and posting photos of the macaques and the views.
- Heavy (10 GB or more): video calls, streaming or working while you are in town.
Many cafés, pubs and hotels offer Wi-Fi, but there is none on the trails of the Upper Rock, where you will rely on mobile data.
Good to know
- Currency: Gibraltar pound, at par with the pound sterling; British pounds are accepted everywhere.
- Main town: Gibraltar itself, as the territory is essentially one town.
- Languages: English is official; Spanish is widely spoken, as is Llanito, the local blend of the two.
- Time zone: UTC+1, or UTC+2 in summer, the same as Spain.
- Plug type: Type G, the British three-pin plug.
- Don't miss: the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and its Barbary macaques, St Michael's Cave, and Europa Point with its lighthouse and views over the Strait.
Travel tips for staying connected in Gibraltar
- If your data stops near the border or the airport, open your network settings and select Gibtelecom manually so your phone does not cling to a Spanish network.
- Load your route and tickets before visiting St Michael's Cave or the Great Siege Tunnels, where there is little or no signal.
- Arriving by cruise ship? Keep data roaming off on your home line while at sea, as ships often switch to maritime networks that are billed separately and can be very costly.
- The macaques are quick and curious: keep your phone in a zipped pocket or bag when you are near them.
Spending time on the Costa del Sol too? Your Gibraltar eSIM works only in Gibraltar, so add a separate Spain plan for the Spanish side. Most recent phones can store more than one eSIM, and you simply switch your mobile data line in settings when you cross the border.
