Best Time to Visit Ecuador: Seasons, Weather & Festivals

Ecuador has no real winter, but timing still matters. Here is when to go for the Andes, the coast, the Amazon and the Galápagos.

Why timing matters in Ecuador

Sitting on the equator, Ecuador has no summer or winter in the European sense. Instead, the year splits into a drier season and a wetter season, and the experience changes dramatically depending on whether you head to the Andes highlands, the Pacific coast, the Amazon basin or the Galápagos Islands.

The dry season (June to September)

In the highlands around Quito, Cuenca and the Avenue of the Volcanoes, June to September is the driest and most popular stretch. Skies are clear, trails to Cotopaxi and Quilotoa are reliable, and views of the peaks are at their best. This is peak season, so book Quito hostels and the Quito-to-Galápagos flights early.

The wet season (October to May)

From October to May the Andes see more afternoon showers, but mornings are often bright and the landscape turns lush and green. Prices soften and crowds thin outside the holiday weeks. On the coast (Guayaquil, Montañita, Salinas) the pattern flips: December to April is warm, sunny and the best time for beaches, while the dry months can be grey and cool.

Galápagos and the Amazon

The Galápagos are good year-round. December to May brings warmer water, calmer seas and great snorkelling; June to November is cooler with rich marine life and active wildlife thanks to the Humboldt current. For the Amazon (around Tena or Coca), drier months May to September make jungle lodges and river travel easier.

Festivals by month

  • January-February: Carnival, with lively water fights and the famous Fiesta de las Frutas y Flores in Ambato.
  • Easter (March/April): Solemn Holy Week processions, especially the Arrastre de Caudas in Quito.
  • June: Inti Raymi, the Andean sun festival celebrated in Otavalo and Cotacachi.
  • August: Quito hosts a busy arts month.
  • November 2-3: Día de los Difuntos with colada morada, and Cuenca's Independence festivities.
  • December 6: Founding of Quito, with bullfights, parades and street parties.

Shoulder season sweet spots

Late April-May and October offer a balance of decent weather, lower prices and fewer tourists, ideal if you want both highlands and coast without peak crowds.
