How much does Ecuador cost?
Ecuador is one of South America's best-value destinations, and because it uses the US dollar, there is no currency to convert. Prices are easy to read and ATMs dispense familiar notes. Your daily spend depends mostly on how you travel between cities, hostels and the Galapagos.
Daily budgets
- Backpacker: 25-40 USD per day. Hostel dorms, almuerzos (set lunches), and public buses.
- Mid-range: 50-90 USD per day. Private rooms or boutique hostels, restaurant dinners, and a few guided tours.
- Comfort: 120 USD and up. Hotels, private drivers, domestic flights, and Galapagos add-ons.
Mainland Ecuador is cheap; the Galapagos Islands are not. Budget 150-300 USD per day there once you add the 200 USD park fee and the 20 USD transit card.
Sample prices
- Almuerzo (soup, main, juice): 3-4 USD
- Restaurant dinner in Quito: 8-15 USD
- Local craft beer (Pilsener 0.5L): 2-3 USD
- Hostel dorm bed: 8-14 USD
- City bus or Quito Metro ride: 0.35-0.40 USD
- Long-distance bus (Quito to Banos, ~3.5h): 4-5 USD
- Domestic flight (Quito to Galapagos): 200-400 USD return
- Teleferico cable car in Quito: ~9 USD
- Cotopaxi or Quilotoa day tour: 40-70 USD
Money and cards
Ecuador runs largely on cash. Carry small bills, as breaking a 20 can be hard at markets and rural stops. ATMs (Banco Pichincha, Banco Guayaquil, Produbanco) usually charge 1.50-5 USD per withdrawal, so take out larger amounts less often. Cards work in city hotels, supermarkets and chain restaurants, but rarely in markets, buses or small towns. Tipping is modest: a 10% service charge is often added in restaurants.
Saving tips
- Eat the almuerzo at lunch, the best food value in the country.
- Take public buses between cities instead of tourist shuttles.
- Shop at mercados like Quito's Mercado Central for cheap meals and fruit.
- Travel the mainland highlands before splurging on the Galapagos.
- Buy your Galapagos transit card at the airport rather than through pricey packages.
